NAS's are way overpriced for anyone technicaly minded, you can get a 4 bay microserver for less than a third of the money. You'll have to set it up it yourself but it's way more versatile and expandable

I've had some experience with a TS-453U, which I would assume is fairly similar. It's a glorified PC running a custom modified Linux distro. If the hardware fails you can rebuild the RAID on a Linux box using mdadm.
