I think he is saying it has more states than the usual on and off?
At least one application seems to be restricting certain states.
The potential benefit of that I see is changing those states become easier if they are more discrete.
It becomes easier to manipulate a dice into the number you want when you start removing unwanted numbers.
It completely lost me unfortunately on the heterostructure.
At least that is what I got out of it so far, but my knowledge is pretty much non-existent.
