Yet 93 per cent of those surveyed said streaming services offer good value for money.

The BBC make some great content but I'd rather choose to subscribe to it on a specific basis. The 'license fee' is totally unsuitable for 21st century media consumption. It's little more than a tax on owning a television. I don't understand how anything can be labelled 'good value' when you don't have a choice in the matter.

The broadcast television model is not going to last forever. Twenty years?

Streaming services are great, but there are a lot of issues such as content creators actually getting paid (e.g., spotify). But they are the future, and the BBC know this (moving more services online, iPlayer is pretty good for catch-up, and so on).

Most people's problems with the BBC actually come from a belief that the BBC is against their own political viewpoint. So right wingers whine about the lefty BBC, and left wingers whine about the right-wing BBC. The fact the BBC annoys both sets of people is probably a good sign.

Honestly I can't even remember what the last thing I watched on the bbc was..... mind you the rest aren't much better because tv seems to be heavily biased towards 'reality' tv and well that doesn't interest me.

I know I wouldn't be paying the fee to watch the bbc if it was a subscription like netflix etc thats for sure.

Re: Public survey: 40 per cent think BBC license fee is good value

I can see both sides of the debate. On the negative side I don't think the BBC can offer the same production quality as someone like HBO or Netflix original series. However the BBC is more than just fictional drama, it's factual daily news, relatively good website content over a multitude of subjects, kids content, multiple national radio stations and dozens if not hundreds of apps, local news and content, worldwide content and helps us spread British culture all over the world, whose value is hard to quantify. To that end I think the £145.50/yr is reasonable value for money.

Doctor who for me I think. Oh no, it was that choir competition that I watched with my wife.

I was quite surprised at home much BBC content I watch on Netflix. Netflix are showing the last series of Orphan Black which is a BBC America program.

The license does jar slightly, but I do get plenty from it. I would object to paying for the junk on ITV though which I think is the point, BBC would be the same as ITV without the license fee so you lose choice.

Oh yes, BBC News channel was the last BBC thing I watched.

Re: Public survey: 40 per cent think BBC license fee is good value

The majority of telly we watch in our house is BBC. CBeebies when the boy is watching (trying to reduce the amount watched), then BBC1 when he's gone to bed. When there's nothing on BBC that I want to watch, flicking through the other channels reveals a mire of reality TV and 'enhanced reality' shows. I'm quite happy to pay the fee, £12 a month is not a great deal. Doesn't it pay for the broadcast infrastructure as well? Although these days, I guess most can be delivered over IP...

It's worth it for the kids shows alone, without the ads, product placement and usually an educational angle too.

Also I can't imagine the likes of Planet Earth bring made on the same scale by anyone else.

Re: Public survey: 40 per cent think BBC license fee is good value

I think BBC license fees are antiquated and no longer justified when we pay for personal choice based subscription services i.e. Netflix, Virgin Media, Sky, etc. Don't get me started on BBC iPlayed - What a load of rubbish. Slow, crap menu system, etc. Is this what we pay for. Get rid and have advertising instead. WE tend to record stuff and fast forward through adverts anyway.. Bye Bye BBC

All I personally want from the bbc is to get rid of the blatant biases they have and just factually report stuff. They have reporters etc that have been pretty anti corbyn and it just feels crappy atm.

Being impartial brings its own kind of bias.

More on topic i wonder if people participating in the Broadband Genie survey got the irony that some of the license fee helps to fund Broadband roll-out in the UK.

I think it's good value but I'd happily pay a quid more to get IPLAYER to work 100%

The last 12 months it's just become a slow buffering disaster on nearly any popular content.

Re: Public survey: 40 per cent think BBC license fee is good value

They should just declare it a tax and make everyone pay it. End of. Not everyone uses the health service, we still tax them for it. Not everyone drives a car, we still tax them to maintain roads. Not everyone has children, we still tax them to pay for schools. It is the fairest tax in that only those with a TV pay it, but quit whining that you don't watch it so why should you pay, if you want to go that route then you need to also whine about every piece of tax you have to pay. Or go live in Greece.

It is a tax, whichever way they want to dress it up. It's outdated and doesn't reflect media consumption today, let alone in 20 years time. It's long overdue to be either scrapped completely or another funding model found (without it being compulsory for those that don't use the BBC services).

£145 is good value for ad free programming and some of the minority interest programming that would never see the light of day if it was purely funded by advertising. £3 a week - less than a pint of beer and about just less than half a gallon of petrol - not expensive.

Of course, it could be subsumed into general taxation, but then there would be no guarantee that it would get the funding due to it - at least the licence fee revenue does go to the BBC.
