wtf is he doing with 1691 tabs? Is his working day log on, open the internet, read the internet, go home?

Yeah, I'm a pathological tab hoarder, and this definitely makes me happy. Waiting for version 55 to be released.

I have to admit that as long as Mozilla insists on dropping the current add-on/extension support (XPCOM/XUL) for Firefox there isn't any development on Firefox that I care about. Mozilla should stop making Firefox to be like Chrome. If I wanted Chrome I'd install Chrome. And really, the add-ons/extensions are what sets Firefox apart from its competitors.

It's not making it like Chrome, it's pushing towards an open standard. Chrome just happened to implement it first.

Re: Firefox Quantum Flow has big impact on app loading, memory

The Tab Mix Plus add-on for Firefox (which is a must have btw) allows you to load tabs progressively, that is it will load 3 and when one finishes loading it will load the next tab. You can set the number of tabs for when this behaviour will start:

Tools > Tab Mix Plus Options > Events > Groups of Bookmarks/History (4th box down) Load tabs progressively when you open more than X tabs.

I often load 30 or 40 tabs at one time and this means I can start reading the first while the rest load.

1691 tabs is a bit ridiculous though

Australis marked the start of the Chromification of Firefox and that's why I switched to Pale Moon a few years ago after seeing some others here on HEXUS recommending it.

The Pale Moon team are committed to keeping and maintaining XUL and the benefits it provides.

I disagree, it seems to me more like Mozilla decided to panic when Chrome's share gained and theirs shrunk, and in doing so decided that the answer to get their market share back was to become a Chrome-clone, despite the fact that it alienates those who helped Firefox into the position it had become before due to the add-on support, and thus making their descent even more rapid.

WebExtensions make customisation a lot more limited than with XUL. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Firefox ended up getting to the point where it gets shuttered, with the way things have gone.

At the same time though, that would then beg the question of what Mozilla would actually have left at that point.

Classic Theme Restorer add-on will get rid of the "chromification". Again another essential add-on.

Only until 57, as that version is killing off non-WebExtensions.

I'm still on 46 as it all just works perfectly and I hate to 'upgrade' for the sake of it. I expect by the time I hit 57 there'll be a workaround.

At the same time however, it means you are leaving yourself vulnerable to any security issues that may be fixed in later versions. I would recommend a switch to Pale Moon instead, but it's obviously your choice.

Re: Firefox Quantum Flow has big impact on app loading, memory

Yet, for me on two different machines - win7/win10, as well as linux, firefox has become unusable.

Not to mention how awful it is on android. I'm getting very close to migrating to chrome for desktop and mobile as its the only browser that seems to do what I need a browser to do - quickly display websites correctly and not take seconds to be unresponsive because someone uses more complex code/extensions.

btw, firefox unlike chrome does NOT load the tabs on startup, it will just show the name of them and load when you open them... so to me this is very boring news as firefox never had any startup slowdown with about 20-30 tabs... I also dunno how you can build 1000 tabs on firefox since it will randomly lose them now and then, meaning you need to dig in browser history to find stuff that has been "left open for later"

Re: Firefox Quantum Flow has big impact on app loading, memory

SeaMonkey always used to be much faster. I seem to remember SeaMonkey (the Mozilla Suite that replaced Netscape) was C++ based and very quick, but a pig to maintain. Firefox (Pheonix??) was a side-project that made it easy to change through the XUL stuff and was a hit with the maintainers.

Problem with SeaMonkey is the lack extensions available for it now - and a modern skin!
