I've been kind of laughing at the mess that is AMD's Vega release, but if this works out, and I can get ~1080 performance from a Vega 56 at €399, I might actually consider it.. I had 2x970's in SLI but one blew up last week.

Lets forget the high END Vega and just make a sub $150 vega APU for notebooks and budget desktops. I am sure a R460 category Vega will demolish intel HD graphics to planet pluto.

No wonder as AMD counted on SK Hynix and ended up having to source HBM2 from Samsung!!

If you can get similar performance by boosting clocks to the same level as the 64 but still without the extra cores enabled, I wonder how far you could go down that path before you really started to notice performance degradation.
I guess what im wondering is if AMD weren't saving costs on the design and manufacture by building a "one chip fits all" solution and instead built a dedicated gaming focused chip with less CUs and perhaps higher clocks, just how much more efficient could it have been?

It's not just about production costs but also about getting Return of Investment in the R&D put into the creation of the card and making sure they can get ROI before a certain date.

Production costs are probably down in the low to mid 100s but the actual production costs are useless 90% of the time. Unless you're Apple or Beats by Dr Dre wherein there is no R&D/innovation budget to affect production costs.

This is great news to be honest, at-least partially. I don't want AMD to be seen as shady and anti-consumer just like team green and team blue.

As for actually losing money I actually feel bad there. I hope these Vega issues are just birth pains and they start to make a bit of money down the road while also standing the test of time just like the HD7000/R9200/R9300/RX400/RX500 series before it. AMD is always sub par at launch, but they always come back from it as well.

Sadly Volta will undo Vega if Nvidia feels like it. Not to mention the 1080ti/TitanXp still stands uncontested.

When it comes to GPU's I fear for AMD and only hope they can stay in the market or come back similar to what they did with Rysen, sadly though Nvidia isn't sitting on their asses like Intel has been for years. Miracles do happen so we can just hope that at-least AMD can compete, even if it's barely like now.
