Its not a massive surprise given that Sony made a huge mistake with their PS4 Pro by not including a 4K/UHD Bluray drive. It's inclusion is a massive part of the appeal of the X (and also the S), and really helps to justify the investment.

I've not bothered personally as the S does what I need (plays 4K blu rays ) but I know that if Sony had included a UHD drive in their PS4 pro..I would have bought one at launch. I get the same feedback from those I know at work who have picked one up - the main appeal wasn't so much the gaming, its the inclusion of the UHD drive.

You'd have thought Sony would have opted for it given how their inclusion of blu-ray in the PS3 massively boosted their own sales back then!

Peter you sure they under £200!!, the 1st Gen 4k bluray players 2 of them are at £179 thats about it and both are crap i've had the samsung 8500 i gave it back. Good 4k players with a decent upscaler are starting at £250 going to £399

You say that but I have my PC for gaming and many other things, for the people that buy this for the UHD Blu-Ray also get to game on it.

I only had a quick look, so thank you for that info. I dont think Ill be going 4K any time soon (although I did see a $K TV today, as it happens, and the picture was stunningly good - although the content had been chosen for maximum visual impact - and the sense of depth was certainly there)

4k player or not, the upgrade is not a big enough boost to warrant the spend, too little too soon in my eyes, same goes for ps4 pro. It is just more money gauging tactics by the gaming industry. Upgrading a console half way through a gen, nope you won't fool me thank you very much! What's next? A modular console that sounds great but just fragments the player base? The hardware version of micro-transactions?

I'd say it's more a case of realising most customers were uncomfortable with following Microsoft so far down the path they'd set out, they've made their intentions clear and i fully expect them to return to many of the "features" that we saw when the Xbox One originally launched, it will just take longer to get there.

I went 4K at New Year, 4K itself is very meh, and you struggle to see the difference from 1080p. But HDR is a whole other level. It's beautiful. The first film I seen was Lucy, and I was absolutely stunned. Last time I was this stunned was when I first seen HD content. Films with special effects are way more immersive. Day to day though, I barely ever watch 4K, I'd rather watch 1080p & retain desktop control, than switch to the netflix app on my TV.

Gaming too, but you don't notice it at first. When you go back to 1080p (my TV does 90hz at 1080p, and for a while I preferred that over 60hz/4K) after a while of 4K it's very noticeable, but at first I was very underwhelmed

I found this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-D...=4k+dvd+player at just under the £200 mark (at the time of posting) and another Panasonic at around £160. I’ve always regarded Panasonic as one of the better consumer AV mfrs.

Ahh thanks peter this must have changed recent sept/oct before that it was £230 in Aug2017 when i was looking at them.

The two best ones on the market i believe are Sony UBP-X800B £299 & Panasonic DMP-UB900EBK £369.

I read an interview the reason why Sony didn't go 4K Blu ray drive. 1) Not enough 4K sold TV's are currently sold 2) from their own research more people have better Internet speeds and would Stream using online services like NetFlix hence Sony has spent more money on their Online service last 2 years. - none the less missed opportunity to future proof their device & get better sales out of it, Clearly it was a mistake to op-out of including a 4K player

Btw i bought a 4K movie on Google Play Spiderman .. To be honest i couldn't tell the difference between a upscale DVD or the 4K streamed movie just looked a little brighter thats all.
