A service being ‘shuttered’!
Is that because it’s about to be enclosed in concrete?
Sorry, the word is shut (or closed) down!

Got to go with peterb here, 'shuttered' is not a common term out my way (in UK). Common 'figure of speech' out my way for a closed down shop is it's closed/shut down, it's gone bust or maybe belly up.
I could have understood the use of 'retired' in reference to AOL but really it's just being shut down.

Not in terms of closing a business or service, no. That is more an American thing.
However:
1/. This is AOL - America OnLine. Quite fitting to use an American term, in this instance.
2/. Shuttering means to close the shutters of something, in particular to close the windows... and since most people will have used this on Windows™, it's actually quite a clever reference.
So nyah!!
I'm guessing this etymological banter comprising the whole content of this thread means no-one here is going to miss, has any kind of nostalgia for, or even gives two hoots that AIM is gone, then?
I'm still sad about MSN Messenger going. I never used AIM though.
ICQ was always better and still is better then facebook, twitter, snapchat, skype and all the other boring rubbish things of today

To be honest, I thought AOL IM was dead a long time ago. I too grew up with that, end of an era.
AOL IM was cool same time around ICQ was about that was fun to use. out of the messengers i loved MSN messenger the most. simple yet brilliant.
i recall everyone using ICQ then jumping onto MSN messenger once it came out - less spam advert emails from people trying sending clickbait of "Britnee Spers nud piks" and without that part-endearing part-maddening eh-oh eh-oh like a deranged encapsulated telly tubby every time a message arrived. The interface was slicker, messaging was faster and ICQ was dumped within a year, whereas MSN lasted a good 5-6 years before everyone dropped it (about the same time facebook took off I think)
And, no one cares. That said, I do believe if it wasn't for AIM facebook might not have been created. Shame on you AIM!
