Microsoft to work closely with Intel on Windows ML

Intel hopes it will sell plenty of its Movidius Myriad X VPUs off the back of the deal.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning must be the most overused and inappropriate word of the 21st century, i wish companies would stop attaching it to everything just for marketing purposes.

So this is an api to compete with tensorflow, but not cross platform, closed source and with limited hardware support?

I am actually surprised that we haven't yet seen a mainstream retail case with automated features and cortana or alexis built in, I have seen custom builds using this idea but nothing for the general consumer and nothing that actually controls parts of the case - "Alexis! pop out one of the drive bays for me I need to switch a hdd, Alexis! all done, pop the drive bay back in and then tell me what the football scores are!".

So if I understand this correctly, you want the equivalent of an astromech droid for gaming? Me, too.

"By storing the parametric data measured by CAM in the cloud, the adaptive noise reduction algorithm can use machine-learning to analyze the ever-growing data set and evolve the weighting and parameters used to determine the optimal fan curve for any given system. The goal is to leverage the power of the crowd to deliver better cooling for everyone that is using adaptive noise reduction."

Re: Microsoft to work closely with Intel on Windows ML

It's everywhere isn't it, what used to be called working with data or knowledge now has to have the AI or ML attached to it, i mean my excel spreadsheet does that and i think it's safe to say that's not what most people would class as AI or ML, all these marketing people are going to achieve by calling things like ASICs AI is another AI winter.

Not really, no. Working with data using deep learning neural nets is called machine learning. It is everywhere because just over a decade ago there was an improvement in network training techniques making an NN practical along with cheap storage for the training sets, and it takes that long to filter through from science to engineering.

Re: Microsoft to work closely with Intel on Windows ML

    Sorry but i disagree.

Working with data over a network doesn't make it "deep learning" (what does that even mean) or "machine learning", we've been working with data for years and been calling it AI for years, you only have to look at the early attempts to get computers to recognize human speech and how it was called AI, now it's just called Google translate and Bable-Fish.

The artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, neural nets or any number of other marketing terms is nothing more than what computers have been doing for decades, working with knowledge, and even the calculator on my desk can do that.

Can we add ‘gaming’ to that list too, please?

    That is why you disagree

I was doing AI work in the 80's so I am well aware of Perceptrons, machine vision, expert systems etc from the past (and how lame they were compared to what we have now).

If your calculator can train recurrent neural networks with terabytes of training data and then validate against a separate test data set then I am impressed. Mine just does trigonometry and stats, but it does have a cute little solar panel.

Please take it from an AI old timer, the way things are done today is *nothing* like the AI of old and I am saying that as someone who has had to basically discard all of the old techniques I knew from the past. Well maybe some of the old convolutional image processing steps are still useful, but even then actual image analysis is utterly different.

Edit: I will agree that the AI term is overused, but only because it is now a standard engineering tool. My car doesn't say fuel injection, overhead cam or turbo on the back, because nearly all cars would all say that and those technologies are now expected. I pick up my phone, unlock with a fingerprint and say out loud that I want to set an alarm for 8am, I shudder to think how many neural nets that activity bounces off. I expect "AI" label will go the same way soon enough, just there.

Re: Microsoft to work closely with Intel on Windows ML

Don't get me wrong i agree with you that computers are doing things that was unheard of yesteryear, however just because they're more advanced doesn't mean they're AI, they're just doing what they've been programed to do and they do it better because they can access and process more knowledge than computers of the past, however that's been the general direction of travel for computers since they were invented.

Take the fingerprint or voice recognition on your phone, neither are AI IMO as they're just following rules that have been programed into them to do certain things when it comes across certain identified conditions, change the conditions and they wouldn't work.

I think you're getting confused with the surface tasks and the methods used to execute them. Take voice control - on modern smartphones it's not following pre-programmed recognisable commands. It's doing full Natural Language Processing to derive meaning, then triggering tasks in response to that processing. NLP is an incredibly complex area of computer science and for Siri/OK Google to work they way they do without any pre-programming by the specific user is definitely down to the use of AI and ML. The fact that on the surface it looks like you're simply triggering programmed responses by using command phrases is testimony to just how good/quick the underlying techniques are nowadays.
