Damnit, I ordered a RPi3 over the weekend for a RetroPie setup, now Amazon isn't processing the cancellation request. Oh well. This is good news anyway, some very nice improvements.

Factory overclocked CPU, 5GHz wifi, gigabit Ethernet (albeit bottlenecked by USB). You know you want to!

Massive increase in power useage being reported though. Especially if PoE is your thing

Yeah PoE isn't the most efficient thing in the world for this kind of thing to begin with. It was primarily developed to power VoIP phones in the office. But if you're just using a USB power brick and WiFi, you really shouldn't see much more power consumption than an equally clocked Pi 3.

If you have a RP!3 it is hardly worth the upgrade will wait for RP!4 I think.

Nope - again the power needed has increased and would even more with extra mem and usb3 and I bet there is no point in going usb3 at the price point (ie. they wouldn't be able to make it at the price point)

Yeah, I think they made some nice, worthwhile improvements, and since they managed to keep the price the same, then nobody can really complain.

A 17% performance boost on the CPU? In Intel terms that would be 3 generations

It can't upgrade beyond 1GB without switching to an incompatible gpu which would be a big upheaval. I think it would be worth breaking compatibility to do that, but I can see the reasoning that the big plus point of the Pi over rivals is the software base so you don't want to break that.

Edit: Khadas Vim gives you 2GB and 2GHz, but it starts at £50 and the USB C port is still only USB 2.0

Isn't the GPU thing also tied into not wanting a GPU that only has closed source drivers? I seem to recall this one was the best available that was open source?

On launch the Pi driver was closed source too. That has improved a bit, but it sounds like the hardware is really just too old at this point. If you want that open source driver to have decent features like Vulkan, I think the community needs to move on.

Best for drivers seems to be Nvidia with the Tegra, which is amazing when you consider how awful their open source support has been in recent years on the PC. I haven't seen an affordable Tegra board though which is a real shame, an Nvidia Pi would likely do very well even at the no doubt £100 sort of price point Nvidia would overprice their hardware at.

Nope - if you want a better performing board than a Pi B+ they are about. But nowhere near the £30 price point

My Tinkerboard wasn't far off the price of a Pi and is quite a bit faster in some tasks.

Edit: OK I checked and it was £55 delivered so more than I remembered. Still, not expensive enough for the price to be memorable clearly. That Khadas Vim board comes with some eMMC flash so might save you the cost of an SD card, and once you add on the cost of power supplies and a case the Pi isn't *that* cheap. They are fun which is why I am up to my ankles in them, but unless you can make do with a Pi zero they aren't really cheap.

How is it dissipating 12.5 W over such a small board? Even one watt in that bare heatspreader would be a huge issue for any reasonable Tjunction
