I want a true IoT doorbell. Just a standard doorbell that optionally calls a webhook or something via WiFi or a signal via BlueTooth. I can then do what I want with that (like text me).
All in my control, all fully flexible.
Raspberry pis have some bare pins for I/O, right? You could just take a normal wireless doorbell, and replace the speaker with a board of your choice watching for a voltage across where the speaker was as a sign that the doorbell was pressed
Yes probably, I was thinking that a BBC microbit might be better for it as they run off batteries and have bluetooth low power built in.
I don't know electronics enough to know how you would monitor was I assume is mains voltage on a door bell on a device that accepts 5 or 12 volt signals though.
And then, there's the time to actually do it.
Door bells are typically 6V. But you don't need the real bell - you just need a button to trigger an input on the pi/arduino etc. You could takre an output from the device to operate a bell, or drive a loudspeaker and send a signal to whatever internet process you want.Originally Posted by Dashers

My house has a cheap wireless doorbell, that's got batteries both ends. Just 3 AA cells in the speaker unit, so the ~4.8 V max you'll get from that will play nice with an input pin
Hmm, the Ring doorbell uses the standard doorbell wiring as a power source and is wireless. You get notifications on your mobile, as well as the ability to talk to people regardless if you are in or out, cloud saves assuming you pay the $25 per annum subscription. Also has a wider FOV and pretty damn good night time vision as well.
What makes this so different aside from pre-recorded responses? I certainly don't see how it's worth spending $5 per month.
As for a smart lock, ewwww, keypads wear out giving any potential intruder an easy way to guess the code...
The Amazon Dash Buttons can be configured to do just that. I bought the Heineken one for £1.99 back in November but have yet to do anything with it.

Video doorbell. Hmm, yup maybe.
Net-connected? Er no. Cloud? Hell no.
Google with a finger in it? Absolutely no way, not now, not ever.
For me, a few customisable, prerecorded responses and a local, internal manual override would be fine.

Yeah, but that might be a stretch for my 83 year old mother-in-law. She has enough trouble programmjng her VCR. And yes, I do mean VCR.
And for me, I want to buy it, install it and get on with my life, not build it and have to program it, When I know someone's already invented the wheel, got light-weight alloys, wheel-balancing machines and all-weather tyres, I fail to see personal attraction for reinventing the darn thing, starting with a bolder, hammer and chisel.
Unfortunately most of the commercial ones seem to be net connected in some way.
