OK, I'm imagining it.... and? So what?
It takes mere moments to take a phone out of my pocket. In fact, most smartphone users seem to take their phones out of their pockets before they sit down anywhere anyway, especially those with more than one phone, lest they snap the flippin' things.
Imagine a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.... Yeah, OK.
Don't know about the photo's , I've got a habit of just dropping my phone , wish they could make HD screens for phones out of transparent rubber.
ictmh- i use these on all my gadgets;

i get through them like anything but my phone survives
I dont have to imagine it - Ive been able to do it for a couple of years.

I wouldn't mind the ability to reply to text messages from my PC. Would save me from lifting my rear and walking to my phone.
The PC client for whatsapp is very useful for this very reason. What I'd really like is an app that allows me to transfer files and photos seamlessly from PC to phone and back again. Frustrating to have to email myself or connect up the cable every time. Really doesn't seem plausible that there isn't a good option for this in this day and age.
If Android, look into MyPhoneExplorer (+ its Android app) and see if that does things in a way you'd prefer.
I do... partly because people's phone data is still sporadic, or they're not logged in, or, or, or....
Partly because many of my friends are even older than I am and the annoying fuddy-duddies refuse anything newfangled like smartphones and WhatsApp... usually under the pretense of being as security-paranois as Mr Saracen, but without realising they're probably wide open anyway.
Partly because SMS is still the single standard on which many companies and entities can reliably communicate with each other.
Facebook, Twatter, WhatsApp, Snapchat, Yammer, Thisser, Thatter, Theotherer... so many social media and comms platforms to choose from nowadays, but SMS remains the single, reliable standard.
Blimey, seventy quid?
Might make sense for a thousand-dollar iPhone, but they don't even make one for my S5. I use Otterbox, but they've stopped S5 cases too.
Like I said £70 isn't cheap, but a new iPhone screen is ~ £80. How much is a new one for an S5?Blimey, seventy quid?

To chime in with another use case - if I'm off cycling/camping/climbing/orienteering/LARPing etc (i.e. any outdoor activity that's likely to involve no secure storage, and a lot of rough terrain, water, or potentially being bashed with rocks/verges/latex weaponry) I prefer not to drag my expensive smartphone around with me. A replaceable £10 feature phone keeps me in SMS contact with everyone I need to be in contact with...
