You probably need to add the article that 500 CPUs are available for the UK only:

Re: Intel announces Core i7-8086K with sweepstakes to celebrate

I doubt AMD will hit back with a higher core-count Threadripper this year. Given how the 28C/56T CPU will likely cost more than my house (slight exaggeration, but still), all AMD has to do is make the (possible) 2950x an even better value proposition than the 1950x.

I do hope that the Zen2 Threadripper has higher core-counts though. That'll make for some even more interesting times.

That would really just be an Epyc though, which means lower clocks to control the heat which isn't much interest to gamers or people wanting a workstation part where Threadripper is pretty excellent.

Well that depends on how they architect it and how much of difference moving to 7nm makes for their power consumption. If they can cram more cores in whilst achieving the same, or better, clock-speeds (with a higher IPC & lower memory latency) at the same price-points that's a huge win.

There's also the strong possibility of new games and software being much more multi-core optimised in the next 18 months (given how that's now the industry trend - suck it, Intel.) so single-thread speed might not matter quite as much.

Can the picture really be correct for the 28C/56T chip? It seems to show all cores running at 5GHz!?

Re: Intel announces Core i7-8086K with sweepstakes to celebrate

Well, 5GHz is the easy part, isn't it? Maintaining that speed, managing heat, power etc is where it gets tricky, as the i9-7980X highlighted. With so many threads, Cinebench won't have put up much fight and it won't have been running long at all.

Intel is a big boy, and they'll figure it out, but I think the power draw will be an interesting stat of this chip when it arrives..

..and to think that one day there will come a time when 28c/56t CPU's will be a minimum requirement for the latest games

Well it is possible, from 14nm to 7nm is two full nodes so in the past it would have been a quadrupling of transistors on the same die size. Problem is, I doubt it will massively help power usage and the transistors will be harder to make so AMD will be wanting to make a smaller die if possible. If double the transistors of RR mean an APU with twice the current graphics power and 8 cores, they might wonder if they need a 16 core CPU only die.

I'm still waiting for the leaked Zen with HBM memory stacks on package.

The link to the sweepstakes seems to throw up a 'page not found' error at the moment... I assume it'll work when it reaches the right time.

so, how does this clause in the terms sit with GDPR - are we covered by that caveat "where prohibited by law"??
