G-Sync HDR 4K monitor images are softer or blurred at 144Hz

Chroma subsampling has been implemented by vendors due to DP 1.4 bandwidth limits.

Re: G-Sync HDR 4K monitor images are softer or blurred at 144Hz

Didn't Nvidia say G-Sync allows them greater control over the final product? If I've not misremembered then it seems odd that they allow what are essentially 120Hz monitors to be advertised as 144Hz.

Impressive tech but who does this flashy RGB 'gamer' design appeal to exactly? I can only assume teenage kids. Guess who doesn't have $2000 to buy a monitor. 99.9% of teenage kids. I might be tempted by something like this when they make one that doesn't look like it belongs in a toy shop.

I have a Predator monitor (one of the less tacky ones) and I already had to buy my own VESA stand for it because it was so hideous. Tempted to put black tape over the horrible logo too.

I was pondering that this morning while staring out the office window, people must be buying flashy RGB 'gamer' designed stuff otherwise they wouldn't keep making it, right?

If so there must be a lot of PC's flashing away.

Loads obviously because I don't know anyone that's really that bothered. I'm officially getting old

Re: G-Sync HDR 4K monitor images are softer or blurred at 144Hz

There should be a definitive note that says image quality will be degraded at 144Hz. To me, anything that compromises the final product if it were to be used to the advertised maximums should be noted.

This reeks to me of the 3.5GB at full bandwidth and 0.5GB at low bandwidth scandal of the GTX970...."Don't say anything and maybe people won't notice".

It'll be dusted under the rug and no one will say anymore on the matter.

Wonder if people will start to see that perhaps Freesync is a better product

    Nah didn't think so

Re: G-Sync HDR 4K monitor images are softer or blurred at 144Hz

Why don't they double up the cables, to get more bandwidth? If you've paid $2k for a monitor (and bought a titan V or two to run 4k 144Hz) then using two DP cables isn't a massive ask

They should have waited for hdmi 2.1

Re: G-Sync HDR 4K monitor images are softer or blurred at 144Hz

Better to wait for v2 of this screen where they use DisplayPort's DSC data compression. That will make 4K@144Hz work with minimal quality loss and will be extremely hard to notice.

As soon as they get their hand om DSC capable controllers they will make the hardware update and we will have a v2 or what ever they will call it. This will happen within 6-9 months.

It's practically Nvidia's business ethos to try and make shortcuts and mislead buyers.
    GTX 970 3.5GB
    2 different 1050's
    2 different 1060's
G-Sync now slightly more of a con than before

And a host of other things over the years. Nvidia are far from the gods gift to gaming many claim them to be. If anything they're the opposite. They've completely stalled innovation because their competitor has fallen behind.

That was my initial thought as well, it's something we've seen with higher resolutions on old CRTs. Perhaps there is a lack of controller or chip to manage two inputs seamlessly for G-sync.

It may get pushed under the carpet but I'm sure some will not buy this product because this has come to light, personally I find £2000 for UHD/144hz is way to much money anyway when 1440p/144hz can be had for under £400.

The asian gamer market, which buys vastly more of this kind of product than we do.

I don't think this has anything to do with G-sync or freesync. It's just a bandwidth limitation on 4k@144hz using dp1.4. Same thing happened back in the early days of FullHD TVs and blu-ray.

I think it still falls to NVidia to have a look at this problem, as you'll have people who bought it for the G-sync quality guarantee or whatever it's called, who end up disappointed. It'll knock said person's confidence in the NVidia brand.

Re: G-Sync HDR 4K monitor images are softer or blurred at 144Hz

Is this news? I think everyone that has been closely following the details of these 2 monitors are fully aware that DP1.4 can't support 4K with 4:4:4 chroma sub-sampling at 144Hz. If you want full 10-bit HDR at 4:4:4 then you are limited to 98Hz, and at 120Hz they will do 4:4:4 using 8-bit colour (i.e. not full HDR).

If you are spending this much on a monitor, you really should be doing some research, and this has been out there for a couple of months.
