Re: "AMD has the most stable drivers" says report

Nvidia's driver stability has been poor for some time. Every two or 3 drivers does something weird. It took them a year to sort out the bsod issue for gears of war among other things.

AMD paid for the research. That doesn't mean it is wrong, I suspect they just "researched" something they knew damned well that right now they could win in a fair fight, but it does dump the work into the PR basket.

I agree, but funding an independent study is not proof of anyone being a shill - that would be paying someone to give a particular view under the misleading guise of something else other than a paid advert.

It's not really an independent study if one of the two hardware producers studied also paid for the study.

My personal experience says nVidia drivers are more stable. Basing the analysis on a single driver release on a single OS is certainly a case of cherry-picking....

I'd be a lot more interested if it documented a large number of configs over many years and architectures.

Hell of a turnaround, I remember having no end of problems back in my 290x an R9 Fury days with the dreded black screen of death.

Just because one of the two hardware producers paid for the study doesn't mean it's not independent, if you were paying for a course in whatever does that make the end of course exam result biased? If you paid for an audit on the security of your companies IT system does that mean the audit wasn't independent?

I don't doubt the study was independent, what i do doubt is if it would've seen the light of day if it had show AMD in a poor light, much like most other independent studies that reflect badly on the person/company/organisation who commissioned and paid for it.

If it was graphed and you could see trends in it.

But I'm typing this on a Fedora box using open source drivers, so I am academically interested yet actually disinterested

Re: "AMD has the most stable drivers" says report

My experience of having dozens of ATI,AMD and Nvidia cards and mates who owned loads of cards too,is that ATI/AMD drivers are mostly fine except any potential problems with Nvidia are buried even big ones.Examples like the bumps issues,or Nvidia Vista issues, etc.

Even Gabe Newell himself told people not to buy Nvidia cards for HL2 for good reason and still people harp on about ATI/AMD problems.

Its almost Apple level defence at times.

This all started with the Nvidia Focus Group lot like Rollo who to deflect from Nvidia having issues with the FX series in DX9 games started spreading all the ATI has issues and are less reliable stuff.

Yet a hardware issue which Nvidia set aside $200 million to cover is quietly forgotten.

If people thought he was bad on Hexus he was doing it for years before elsewhere before his sig change.

This is despite the fact AMD embedded GPUs power consoles, and almost all the cockpit display systems of newer generation Airbus and Boeing airliners and airlifters. If driver support was that bad you wouldn't find them in airliners ffs and neither would Sony and MS spend billions of dollars on amd hardware.

QA Consultants has been a round for min year, And could have said same about nVidia to so stop your whining when both have there up and down side.

    What whining?

I didn't say this is fake, I just don't think this is news or useful. Besides as I said, I am on Linux open source drivers so it doesn't impact me either way

Or if airbus, etc trust them it really is another case of the reality not being close to the perception.

But what what feedback do I have after having helped 100s of people online and in real life with builds doing everything from gaming, running various forms of equipment, etc over the last 10+ years.

I have yet to hear people moan at me about graphics driver issues to any significant degree when most MAJOR issues in games are down to devs rushing out buggy crap which is not properly tested, and even if you were to look at reported issues, etc literally EVERY AMD and Nvdia driver release has a list of bug fixes or performance fixes, etc anyway, with numerous threads on their own forums.

Almost all the 30 ATI,AMD and Nvidia cards I had have done their job, and I only care who gives me the most FPS/£ in the games I want to play. Plus if I were to compile minor annoyances I have had a bit more with Nvidia cards, since I have had actually slightly more of them, but they about par in my view and for the most part I have been a perfectly happy PC gamer with both companies! When it comes to hardware failures, most of the cards over the last decade have worked fine, and again about par there, and even one of them was down to drinking too much and throwing magentic ball bearings everywhere!

I am not a person who knowingly recommends something buggy since its not my money(plus in the realworld I don't want to get moaned at by people I know) and hence why I don't really sell overclocking as a guaranteed feature just a nicety.

I have had more people hit by retailers not shipping boards with up to date BIOSes since some retailers end up not checking their own stocks properly.
