Or... just stop making phones from glass. Please. Just use it for the screen and ensure it's made of something that's not going to crack. It's an every day item, it get used dozens of times a day. It will get dropped. Why make it out of something that is known to break when dropped and then have the brass balls to promote it as "this smashes less than before!"

No, make it out of metal or posh coated polymer or something that isn't glass. You end up needing a case which negates all the advantages of "it feels good" and so on. It also shows that you don't care about the end customer, but about the journalists who will say how amazing it feels and so on in their reviews where they don't use a case. I hate having to use a case for a phone, it gets in the way, the magnets seem to mess with the compass / navigation and it makes it harder to use. Bring back the old HTC metal designs.

I don't drop it and don't put in in my pocket with my keys... its not hard.

While I have accidentally dropped my phone a number of times over the years (although probably nowhere near as many as some people), it has never resulted in the screen being smashed (or noticeably scratched for that matter).

I can only assume that to be partly due to it mostly being indoors, and partly due to the fact that my choices haven't been the top range ones (such as iPhones) that seem most prone to it happening due to having glass backs etc., judging from various comments I've read in the past.

I believe the smartphones I have had have all included previous iterations of Gorilla Glass too, so it certainly does a good job.

No, you are not alone (hoping I’m not tempting fate) but I keep my phone in a wrap around case so the screen is covered when it’s in my pocket and has a degree of protection if it is dropped.

I am still so frustrated by the use of glass for phone screens.

A plastic screen (Which is almost impossible to crack) fronted with a replaceable glass screen protector (For scratch resistance) would save so many expensive repairs.

My, plastic screened phone has now survived 4 years and it's been dropped MANY times including a few climbing related mishaps, one of which was a 14m drop...

Because consumers are stupid, they believe anything the phone makers say and what they make the reviewers and review writers say through advertising revenue to grease their palms. They use the stupid word called "premuium".
- "Oooh its made of glass so it feels premium."; or
- "Ooh its made of metal, so it feels more premium." ; Or
- "its shiny to be trendy/premium."
- "Apple said so".

Apple was the chief culprit. Other brands followed. The glass back became the dominant choice because it allows wireless signals to pass through, unlike metal backs. It also BREAKS easily, which is the only way, phone manufacturers can milk consumers repeatedly by charging consumers repeatedly for glass breakage repairs & replacements.

I don't give a rat's ass about metal or glass bodies. Plastic/polymer/polycarbonate has always been the best choice for phone casings as they have a high strength to weight ratios, do not shatter, allows wireless signals to pass through, is cost-effective to make, does not smudge with fingerprints, do not freeze your fingers off in winter, makes your phone lightweight instead of sagging in your pocket etc.

If any phone startup reads this (think Essential phone type) - do a return to classic phone (Galaxy SIII / LG G3 / LG G4 / LG V20) kickstarter project:
- a phone with top of the line phone components (display & CPU, RAM);
- wrapped in a military grade polymer (think Glock pistol grade that is heat and impact proof);
- with a removable back made of the same polymer to access a removable battery & micro-SD card;
- stock AOSP Android (no development costs to worry about!).

I assure you the power users on XDA developers alone, not to mention all the intelligent, rational users around the world, will make your kickstarter an astounding success.

- really good camera performance,
- 3.5mm headphone jack (independent of the USB socket),
- NO screen notch,
- 4G with 5G readiness,
- wireless AC with WPA3 readiness

and you've nailed it. Especially if the battery will go a full 24 hours with wireless and GPS both running.
