If there will be a HL3, it will not be made by Valve, and it will not be as good as you want it to be.

Re: Valve working on Steam Machine compatibility tools

Remember emulation tools aren't usually going to run games as fast as the native OS/hardware could
FYI WINE literally means Wine Is Not an Emulator.

All it does is provide an exe and dll loader, along with re-written back-ends for Linux. So it just translates the Windows calls (DX9, DX11, etc) into Linux-compatible calls.

It's actually pretty damn fast. If you can get it to work with your particular game.

It will be better appreciated than a Steam Machine.

The numbers using a console still grow every day.

Re: Valve working on Steam Machine compatibility tools

An emulator interprets compiled code and recompiles. WINE is basically the Win32 API written again, and compiled for Linux. There is no reason for it to be slower than native windows, it can theoretically be faster - depending on who did a better job of writing it and dependencies such as the kernel.

I really like the idea of a Steam machine, but a Steam Link kinda killed the need for it for me. I've love to switch my desktop to Linux, but each year that feels like it's closer, it's actually even further away.
