Papermaster...
I recall reading in a few places that the current nodes (16 and 12 nm?) weren't the best types for CPUs and GPUs, as they were designed for lower power consumption. Have I understood that correctly? If so, does this mean that this 7nm node is much better suited to high-performance CPUs and GPUs?
End of the year...they better not be lying again. This is close enough to make people wait 2/3 months after Turing, but if we get to the end of December and stock isn't on the shelves the people giving AMD a chance are going to go ballistic. They better keep their word this time around since they seem so confident in their assertions.
I take it this means they fixed the PCIe reset bug and others that was present in 14nm Vegas?
It's a damn shame they're not releasing this as an RX Vega product with partners, they could be selling a fixed Vega for the desktop that costs them less to produce.
They are not talking about consumer gpus. Instinct line is strictly enterprise/server only. They have already stated on other occasions that their 7nm Navi will be out in 2019. This is old news.
Also their 7nm will most likely be a successor to RX580. They will most likely not have a big gun coming out first with the new nodes.
Though it's not been hinted at in any way as far as I'm aware, AMD could potentially release a desktop version if they feel the market is there, and if the product is suitable. Nvidia's RRPs for Turing likely leaves some space in the market, and given the die size they probably don't have that much room to drastically drop prices.
After all, the development is already done, I guess it just depends on things like yields, market conditions and timing of Navi.
Don't get me wrong I'm not saying it's likely. Just speculating.
The Desktop version GPU will be Navi. Most likely it will use GDDR6 rather than HBM2. Next year there will be a lot more suppliers of GDDR6. I think NVIDIA is just using Samsung at the moment so supply might be limited.
A desktop version REALLY needs to compete with the RTX 2080 as 4K gaming at 60 fps would be really nice with the large amount of free sync monitors that are on the market.
navi will be mid 2019 if they can get a 7nm vega on the shelf's nov dec time .. it's win win for amd
a slightly faster vega a little cheaper ..biting at the heals of a 2080 .. yeah they will ...

It's nice to see them not resting on their laurels. Now if only they could do something similar with consumer gpus at a respectable price point.
