Most people will indeed (including myself), but there had been (possibly still is, I don't know) a bit of a push to show it as being a competitor to Twitch too, rather than only being for pre-recorded videos.
The only reason I was aware of it was because I clicked on a few links and read a few mentions of it at the time.
I've been aware that you can Live Stream on YouTube and, annoyingly, some of my favourite reviewers have started hosting Live Streams.
Elite/Frontier Dev'ts has been doing them for ages, but they're over an hour long and I really am not interested in the slightest by a couple of guys talking through the most minute minutiae of a game like that, when I could be playing it my own self.
The others just spend more time answering the same old 'fave colour?', 'fave sandwich?', 'r u gay?' type questions in the chat, with barely five minutes of actual content... so probably just like Twitch, really.
Most of the time I'd get emails telling me the channel was 'Live Now!', usually when I was at work or something, so again pretty pointless.
There's always going to be streamers of varying quality (and timezones of course), but the main aim was probably to tempt the top streamers over and take their large audiences and revenues away from Twitch so that they have a bigger piece of the pie, and bragging rights that people would rather use YouTube for it rather than thinking of Twitch first when it comes to the subject of gaming streams.
ahah, it was always going to be a flop because YouTube has a good notification and recommendation engine anyway
