Yeah I totally didn't see this one coming.
Anyone willing to put money on the other two not doing the same? Yeah thought not. I'm sure any soon to be announced reduction in production by SKY Hynix and Micron is entirely coincidental
SK Hynix already did months ago:

Micron got a few other problems to think about https://www.cnbc.com/2018/09/20/micr...s-margins.html
so they may be slowing down production due to less demand because of their prices going up to tarrifs.
Oh well looks like my next build is using the cheap potato RAM I picked up last year for £56. Ryzen with 2400MHZ RAM is definitely going to be negative E-PEEN.
When will Hexus allow swearing in appropriate situations?
This is fine, Samsung. Carry on. I just won't upgrade and you'll go from a sale with a profit to no sale at all. Not my problem. I WAS going to buy another 8GB of RAM but I'll do without. No biggie.
Idiots.
Problems of having shareholders to keep happy
Old puter - still good enuff till I save some pennies!
They're not even trying to hide the alleged price fixing anymore are they, it's like they're sticking two fingers up at regulators and daring them to take action.
Bad publicity hurts a business much more than moaning in a comments section of a web site, get posting on unsocial media and get a negative campaign going.
Hope you wont miss the profit from that 970 EVO 2TB, 2018 65 Q9F Flagship QLED 4K and WW8800 QuickDrive washing machine I was about to buy, Samsung.

I thought these memory manufacturers were being investigated for price collusion. Isn't this the same deal? Or was it thans?

Be Careful on the Internet! I ran and tackled a drive by mining attack today. It's not designed to do anything than provide fake texts (say!)
Well, it doesn't take much collusion when there are only three players left.
And since both Hynix and Samsung know that Micron has far higher costs/is way less efficient, then Samsung's decision really depend on what Hynix is going to do.
While a few friendly meetings on a Korean golf club might help, even that might not have been necessary.
Having said all that, you would expect Samsung etc. to be cautious and try to read the future right before parting with $4 billion+ to expand production. The danger is that after years of low profits and other players going under, the current high price encourages others to enter the market and then Samsung cannot respond with production increases to bankrupt them before they get too big.
Of course, the major new players seem to have Chinese government backing so they might be hard to drive off.
