I'm not sure we *need* to deduce - I thought they'd explicitly stated they weren't doing any more phone-specific versions of Windows?

Of course, Windows 10 on Arm is coming for cellular PCs, so I rather suspect that we might see a few niche devices in a phone or phablet form factor using full Windows 10. But then Windows on phone was always kind of niche anyway...

The updated failed a couple of times but appears it was due to the download not finishing as the time it completed the software distribution folder was around double the size. the section after the first reboot was very quick. Switched to dark mode and no issues in the very limited use so far. If you use headphones make sure you check the volume before listening to anything as the volume was set to max volume which was a shock listening to AC/DC on youtube!

Two things in there exemplify part of why I don't use W10.

One, "feedback and telemetry". Okay, MS, how do i disable both, entirely, and unless I chsnge settings, permanently?

Second, in your Update Settings, where's the "Disable auto", including downloads. When I want it, I'll come to you and get it.

You forgot "And how do I verify that I have disabled all telemetry?". And "Can I really trust your system?"

With a few minutes fiddling such things are possible, but I don't have the same level of paranoia To be fair to MS they're not only given users more control over this but adding tools to examine the data that's sent to the current release. On the latter point it's quite a shift (mentally) to just let it update itself but (on multiple systems) I've only had a positive experience with it.

Each to his own though but personally I'm very happy with 10 and also with some of the new nifty features. The flip side of the feedback stuff is that it really does let them do better - I only wish such things were possible for our business but we lack the resources to implement, process and react to it.

Is it paranoia if someone really is spying on you?

Thing is, after about 20 years of using MS OS's, there have been a series of events from about W8 onward that have heavily eroded my trust in MS. There have also been a whole shedload of events elsewhere that has eroded my trust in virtually everybody, and everything, to do with the tech world and, for that matter, corporates generally. Examples - dozens and dozens of major data leakages, the well-documented snooping from everybody from Google and FB to Samsung (and other) TVs, to VW (etc) and the utterly scandalous diesel emissions rigging farce.

I could cite one example after another, and not just (by any means) with MS, but I'm sure you're as familiar with them as I am, and if not, Google is your friend. Well, it isn't, but you know ehat I mean.

So I came to the conclusion, quite some time ago, that the ONLY person that really cared about my privacy is me, and absolutely, categorically, big corporates not only don't care if I value my privacy, but in their mass data grabbing greed, are a definite danger to it.

Why?

Because mass data = matkeying granularity, personalised adverts and is the Holy Grail of marketing and advertising.


And for MS more directly, once burned, twice shy. When, years ago I installed an "urgent" update without backing up first, it completed borked my entire machine on a 9am power-up, when I had a 12 noon desdline.

I decided at that point that NO updates were getting done except at a time and circumstance convenient to me.

Then, I'll image my C drive to a backup drive (identical drive, kept for the purpose), boot ftom that backup with master drive safely disconnected, and test that both the system, and ALL necessary apps (been caught by old apps and even hardware, not working after an update too) before trusting it.

All that is ONLY possible if updates do not happen automatically, and require me to explicitly kick the process off.


Then, telemetry.

MS have yielded a bit to customer pressure and somewhat centralised the controls for turning it all off, but the fact remains it's MY machine and damn well didn't ought to be turned on unless I give permission.

It's the corporate arrogance of MS deciding that THEY have the right to alter, update or reconfigure MY machines(s) at their convenience. No, MS! you really flaming well don't.

So, it's nothing to do with paranoia. It's about their arrogant seizing on control over my machines, which is absolutely in line with general corporate views that they are entitled to do what they want with our machines, our personal data, and so on.

I have set my network connection to metered. Means I can't remote control jriver or foobar1k (or both) at least it is insurable !?
