Re: Windows 10 update rollout paused due to user file deletion

The update stopped my GPU from working. I just got a blank display. Using the latest drivers as well. Was definitely the feature update as I rolled it back and all was well.

Says a lot that I downloaded it and installed it manually when I knew I had time to address any problems rather than waiting for it to be installed as scheduled, knowing there'd be issues and not wanting to have to fix them when I was busy.

....WHAT if Microsoft makes a new version of Windows(11) from scratch just like the way AMD did with the Zen Micro-architecture? atleast it will be at par with Apple OSX. This deal of windows 10 architecture being similar with XP is a problem....holes holes holes

Then you'll have problems with legacy support. You'll still end up with large sections of code being copy-pasted to ensure older stuff works properly (and for speed of development) at which point it becomes similar to XP anyway. Remember OSX is Unix underneath.

I went through this myself years ago. I wrote some software for a specific PC and learnt from mistakes and patched bugs and so on but the number of times this happened annoyed people. Fair enough, I was learning as I went, etc. Then someone else decided they could do better and started literally from scratch, I sat back and watched as they didn't want my help and it went through exactly the same problems I'd already experienced and coded around. In any big project there will be problems and one of the biggest issues is the near infinite number of hardware configurations (each with many different firmware and driver configs to cope with) for which you simply can not ever fully test. One of the reasons Apple has a big advantage over MS (and Google, come to think of it) is that it limits the number of hardware configurations so everything can be tested properly and it also sets a product lifespan of only a few years. So my 2011 Macbook will no longer get OS updates whereas I betcha there are loads of PCs of that age or older and people will just expect that Windows 10 will just work if they meet the min spec.

Microsoft's Dona Sakar has told Twitterers that "If you've run into the 'missing files after update' issue for 1809/October 2018 Fall update, please call our support line. They have the tools to get you back to a good state. " She has clarified that "If you have files in your Docs folder still, none were deleted."

They did that, it was called Windows NT, and via XP this is where it got us. I started using NT with version 3.51 and it was far from ideal with lots of stuff refusing to run and pretty bad performance. I would hate to go back to that.

Still, sounds like as someone who only uses Windows for games this shouldn't hurt me as my documents folder starts off empty

Call support, they'll work out which user you are and restore your files from Microsoft's "telemetry" database.

Re: Windows 10 update rollout paused due to user file deletion

This happened to a computer I was upgrading to windows 10 (from 7) - but the documents weren't deleted, the folder contents had just been moved. I wonder if the same thing has happened to others with this update.

    Pretty sure that's a no.
Moving / renaming / creating a new folder for C:\Users\ is a common thing especially with re-installs.
Deleting the whole folder is not. But it is the only explanation for the affected users suddenly having so much disk space.
Windows 10 and it's forced updates of the operating system and hardware drivers is still a mess.

No problems here, a dirty upgrade on my games rig and clean install on the laptop as it had a few bugs I would rather not waste any more time on.
