It's about time for it to happen. RAM prices has been as prohibitive as GPU ones for quite a long time. I really hope that crypto mining never ever again become a thing in PC. They hurted us and badly.

I would have thought when taking into account capacity requirements (16GB+) that the 8GB modules would have already been the base.

The mistake you made there is assuming that it had been driven by customer need, its not. There's only a few ram manufacturers so for the last few years they've avoided investing in ram or manufacturing capacity because they could make more money charging you more for the same thing because of limited availability. Its price fixing, simple as that.

Whilst the DDR5 standard is near completion, it'll take a few years for memory controllers to be developed so crystal ball estimate might be 2021.

Don't really need to upgrade but fancied building a new system when Ryzen was released , maybe more so with Ryzen 2 but the OTT pricing on DDR4 totally put the block on it. I'm not getting ripped off with these prices which are way over the top. I would only need 2 X 4GB 3200 and currently that sits at about £90 in the UK and until that comes down to a sensible £50 - £60 mark I'll plod along with my Phenom X4 965 which does things as fast as I need. I would have even considered the 2400g APU but apparently that requires Win 10 to work which I will not entertain nomatter what. I would imagine there are loads of peeps out there in the same boat and won't upgrade due the prohibitive and greedy cost of ram.

Like others I really wanted to pull the trigger when Ryzen came out and even more so now, but when I need 32GB minimum (photo/video editing, sometimes bouncing off my current 16gb) I just can't justify the cost of the ram. So my 3570k is doing overtime.

I do wonder how much this is hurting other hardware sales as I don't think I am alone in delaying a new cpu/board upgrade due to ram prices.
