Microsoft acquires Obsidian and inXile Entertainment

Probably best known for Fallout: New Vegas and Wasteland 2, respectively.

Terrible news - Wasteland 2, Pillars of Eternity and PoE2 all have Linux ports and are on all the consoles. Under Microsoft I expect future titles will be Xbox/Windows only

Re: Microsoft acquires Obsidian and inXile Entertainment

"Its latest project, Wasteland 3, is expected to launch in 2013."

    That confused me

I'm happy to see Microsoft really putting the effort in to change things up.

Re: Microsoft acquires Obsidian and inXile Entertainment

"within Microsoft Studios they will “continue to operate autonomously and bring their unique talents, IP, and expertise"

They are either naive or try to mislead their audience - either way not good.

Microsoft gives $$$ > microsoft gets what it wants and thats more $$$ no matter what. Do not pre-order or blindly buy their games anymore. Try it first because they won't be the same quality for sure.

Meh... There have been enough console-exclusive games that I've never played because of it, but the world hasn't ended yet...

But having played Wasteland 2 and PoE under Linux, and am waiting for a deal on the Switch version of PoE 2 this announcement disappoints me.

Well, "Microsoft Studios now has 13 developers under its wing".... How many of them have since shuttered up and converted to producing Xbox/Windows only titles?

The only people even speculating that things will be thus fenced in are "Some games industry watchers"... So until that actually happens, maybe wait and see?
Even if what Moony suggests is true and MS are all bout the $$$s, they'd be silly to close off customers of existing franchises on different platforms... because even if they don't go out and buy a device that requires the purchase of Windows, they can still purchase a Microsoft-owned game, which brings in the beloved $$s.... Closing things off like that would be foolish, unless it was an Xbox only exclusive and thus kept from even the PC gamers anyway

Possibly, but then MS does love Linux.

On the otherhand, PoE2 sold like crap and results in situations like this.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

That was my very first thought after reading the headline ...well, the first thought right after "Oh no!"

Microsoft has a nasty habit of shutting down the studios it has acquired.

Bungie are still going, as are Mojang who still support Linux and other OS for Minecraft. They acquired Rare on 2002 and they're still going too.

I'm not saying they're sweetness and light or that all their taken over studios survive but it's not the automatic death sentence it would be if EA took them over.

As for future games, assuming they're available on PC I'll judge each on its merits rather than who owns the studio.

Actually I was asking because I don't know, and because I suspect that it's not that many.... specifically not that many who have gone over to producing just Xbox/Windows games..... if they weren't already doing that.

Re: Microsoft acquires Obsidian and inXile Entertainment

Great news. Sorry, but I love Xbox as much as I do PC gaming, if not more so (my sig is kinda evidence of this).

Microsoft supplying them with the financial clout and time to produce what will hopefully be their masterpiece.

As for concerns of studios closing, well that has happened of course. Though EA are the worst for that (looking at you Visceral, with your awesome looking single player star wars game). Every major publishing house has done this, not just MS. But I think the management of MS Studios is different now. What with Spencer and Booty now in charge of everything gaming, and that they understand that making a great game takes time, and that they really really really need this new initiative to work, I think this will be a successful thing.

    <dear god I hope this is successful>

I don't know - Forza Horizon would be ripe for microtransactions, but credit to MS, there aren't any. Sure, like other car games you can buy extra car packs or expansions, but there's honestly no need to given the vast content you get with the base game.

I'm cautiously optimistic. Obsidian deserve proper backing, yet, they often produce great stuff when under pressure! If MS allow them to keep their own direction (for better or ill) then great.
