"Unit-E smacks-down the idea that technophiles wielding a Raspberry Pi with DOSBox and a 3D printer could build a similarly capable system for less..."

In what way do they do that? (Sorry, I didn't watch the video, maybe the answer's in there?). I don't see a price in the article or on their website, and a Raspberry Pi doing this would be very cheap indeed...

I too would like clarification on the above, these will have to be priced very low to be able to say that truthfully and confidently. I mean they literally could use a PI with DOSbox and a 3d printer themselves, but they have to make a profit on their device, so they couldn't charge the same or less than doing it yourself unless they have sourced an even cheaper way of doing it on a mass scale.

And the cost of licensing the games. People often forget to include the cost of software (for whatever reason, nefarious or neglect).

I know the beige casing is a nod to 90's PC haute couture, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea to style contemporary hardware the same way. Biege plastic went out of fashion for a reason - it looks minging!

Other things that will be added during crowdfunding include at least one colour alternative (not everyone likes nicotine-beige).
    So off-white as well...

Liking the tarnished sun yellowed case it has that machines from that era often have due to the injection moulding with bromine for the fire proofing!

Must admit I seen this a few days ago and actually thought it was a joke with seeing things like the VHS mini and a few others recently. If it is real it could be a decent little machine but you could have issues with control method if using it for games

So, Raspberry Pi + case + accessories ~ £60 (from The Pi Hut) plus a few games from GOG, maybe ~£100.

I guess this thing might come in cheaper depending on exchange rates but I still think a Raspberry Pi would be more fun* and more flexible.

I like the fact that it's not just off-white, the front is pre-faded from sunlight. They never came this yellow, they just landed up like that.

Raspberry pi and case? For a bit more you could just get a mini Atom based PC.
