You mean it will *continue* to go downhill as it has done for years...I doubt the move to India will make much difference - the days of Apple making top quality "best of the best" devices are long gone. Their pricing has been increasing as the quality drops for quite a while now.

Why the assumption that anything made in India is of poor quality?

Re: Apple to start making its top-end iPhones in India says report

The only thing i can see with moving to India is to get away from America and china having their pathetic duking match.

India does not inherently drop quality but you do have to push harder for the same quality. Having customers whom have attempted to move manufacturing to India and the disparity of work ethic versus other parts of the world is high. You have a billion people, not enough work for all of them, maybe only a fifth. So what do they do? The employees work less so you have to employ more to get the job done. I have heard this from 3 of our Customers and one of our vendors.

Also, China can be quite strict on Quality Control, India has far less requirements and has a "get it done" ethic. That is probably what people are referring to.

    Such as?
The vast majority of phones made in India stay in India, they are only made there to avoid the huge import taxes imposed by the Indian government.
Xiaomi is the main OEM that makes most of it's phones in India but India is their main market and they do this to avoid import tarrifs and keep costs low.

Bring on the 100% block of China ASAP. They are very vulnerable to bankruptcy right now. As long as they think hacking everyone is how they progress going forward (they said this), stop all china goods from entering your country. I hope trump puts a block on 100% china goods ASAP. Get it over with and bring their economy to a screeching halt NOW! There is only one way to combat them, stop dealing with them period! The world can easily make up for their crap which much of their stuff is poisoning us anyway or just plain fake. Siding, sheet rock, kids toys, etc etc. Tons of crap we keep catching that is literally attempts to kill us all IMHO. How can you make so many poisonous products on accident? Not possible. I now attempt to buy everything that says NOT in china, and am shopping USA as much as possible. Don't tell me the brits, french, italians etc etc wouldn't like a huge chunk of China's jobs and income We can all make more by cutting them out of the world. Yet another thing the Clintons screwed up (inviting them into WTO biggest mistake on earth in 100yrs probably...ROFL).

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-Wg7wxVfAg
ROFL, no safeguards Bill. They been dumping steel, aluminum etc for years. Poison products, while blocking ours with high tariffs etc. Give me a break. "Encouraging them to play by the rules"...LOL. Uh, cut them off at the knees trump!
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrV6BSBtFV0
Idiot, or just a sell out? You decide. They steal 300-600B a year, no matter how nice we are. ISOLATE them now! Bill was wrong, massively wrong. Kick them out of the WTO and watch how fast they collapse. I wouldn't buy an Iphone anyway, but If I was going to, it would be one made in india etc You want your jobs back (like usa manufacturing coming back), cancel deals with China and watch your people get new (old?) jobs. Our unemployment has tanked! Yours will too.

Ignore nobodyspecial, they come onto contentious topics and diarrhoea into a comment and won't reply to anyone contending their points. This is one of their less ridiculous comments.

They are, as their name implies, nobody special.

The Indians (in my experience) make production really cheap and labour intensive. They will drive the price down on anything they can as there are huge amounts of labour. Quality seems to reduce because of the strict get it done quickly and cheaply ethic.

Not to say there isn't anything wrong with that but might not be a fit for Apple for example

Even if true, and I think that's arguable, it'll lead to one of two secarios :-

    - India will be forced, quite rapidly, to improve standards, or

    - manufacture will relocate.

I'd say it's all part of a cycle we've seen before.

Anyone remember when Japan first started exporting cars to the West? I do and many standards, including that if steel quality, were ghastly. Datsuns, for instance, were rust-buckets...some of the riddled the day they rolled off the ships.

Anyone think Japanese car stsndards are stil like that? Or have western manufacturers had to scrabble out of their compacency?

We've seen 'cheap' products from Japan threaten the West, then Taiwan did it to Jaoan, China did it to Taiwan and I've long said India will do it to China. Then .... Africa will do it to India. Where you have cheap labour it's inevitable labour-intensive jobs will do this, and it's just as true, if less obvious and overt, that the less-developed economies can develop, at least up to a point, very fast indeed. It's not so true of, oh, genetics, pharma, etc, but even for high-tech manufscturing there's an obvious cost-benefit to investing a building factories and then trainning up local staff.

So even if Indian standards dtop, it'll be a blip and it'll self-correct. Parts of India have come a lkng way, but my bet is the Indian government will be desd keen on this sort of project, hoping it's the thin end of a future wedge.

My advice to Africa? Political instability is the dire enemy of investment.

Indeed sire - things will change, but the timescale is the issue here I believe...
All part of the cycle, although I reckon Trumpton will have a hard time putting sanctions on India like he has to China et al
