I'm guessing this has been put up for review early to let everyone know it works with G-Sync(?)
I, like I think most home PC users, have the back of my monitor facing and close to, a wall. So what is the point of wasting money on all the silly lighting on the rear?
You have a perfectly valid point to most of us however it is because people will still buy it? Based off of the looks when viewing it online and not thinking of said issue. Plus it will allow the manufacturer to put the price up for the monitor even higher in order to get more profit off of the LED costs. I expect now that one manufacturer has started, it will not be long until we see a couple more "gaming monitors with rear lighting" before the end of the year.
Atleast with gaming laptops with rear lighting you can kind of understand it as it is portable and people with likely see the back of the lid. Granted its more power wasted and these gaming laptops still typically need to be tethered to a power socket the majority of the time.
just what I thought, why don't they have the RGB like the Asus ROG monitors where it's pointing downwards at the desk or like Razers Raptor monitor with a Chroma strip around the stand.
although I do like the in monitor frame rate display and the Crosshair thing is cool
So why did I pony up a £200 premium for G-Sync?
What's wrong with implementing it in the panel ASIC? The "proper" Nvidia hardware is just a dongle so they can control sales, in hardware terms it is just unnecessary.
Edit: I'm not saying Gsync has no value, or that those panels aren't good, just that the Nvidia board isn't where the value comes from. Anything that can be done in Nvidia's FPGA board can be done at least as well and probably better in the panel controller as ASICs are cheaper, clock faster and you miss out the displayport in and out connections of the Nvidia board which can only add latency.
Because at the time it was the best monitor you could get? I don't think I have seen a £200 premium charged for Gsync, if there is an equivalent freesync monitor it is usually £50 to £100 cheaper so I expect half of that £200 at least was going on a better panel to pass Nvidia's testing.

Oh, I missed this one. Only just got the article in my email!
In theory, you could choose to flood that wall with ambient lighting in your colour(s) of choice. You're not supposed to be looking at a screen in complete darkness anyway, as it knackers your eyesight.
But as mentioned, players at E-Sports and LAN parties will have their backsides exposed, so they might as well make them look all funky and cool like a kevved up car... and we, the home users will buy this kit because we wanna be just as awesome as E-Sports players - All the girls want them, all the guys wanna be them!!
I would question the use of the term 'tactical' though, for various reasons... those others aside, given its use of 'tactical' in a marketing context, I would expect the monitor to come in stealthy paint jobs (matte black, desert coyote, MTP camouflage), to be MOLLE compatible, and have edges or compartments that function as a compass, bottle opener, whistle, fire-steel, glass-breaker, handcuff key, salt shaker, tampon holder and RFID blocker.
While I'm kinda disappointed by the lack of Tacticool EDC Prepper features (not even as a multi-tool keyring companion accessory? Missed a trick there, Gigabyte dudes!), I like the idea of mapping all the tactical console features to hotkeys. Something you can switch to mid-game if you need to, without having to pause for 30 seconds... or just utterly ignore, if none of it is your thing.
Again, props to Gigabyte for thinking of something cool and usual, and doubly so as I can actually find uses for it!
