Stop charging so stuffing much and watch me splash the cash. They're too expensive. Price out your customers and of course sales will fall. If you want to charge premium prices you have to accept you are marketing to a smaller demographic and cut your cloth accordingly.

Yep. I have a GTX970 and a 4K telly, so I currently game at 1080p and I'm only going to jump to 4K.
Make the cost of entry to 4K less than it was at 1080ti launch 2 years ago and you can have my money.

If you have a 4K tv, i doubt you're gaming at high FPS, so buy a cheap AMD GPU and join the 4K master race. I've been playing on 4K with RX480 and most games run at 60fps.

Well isn't this obvious? If you don't keep releasing new products which are demonstrably better than the old ones on a regular basis then people will not upgrade as frequently... Produce a next gen product every few months and people will upgrade. Produce a next gen product every few years and people won't upgrade because there is nothing to upgrade to. I am not going to buy a new card every year if it's the same lot of cards available, what sense would that make?!

It isn't just this point (although valid), the bottom dropped out of the crypto currency market, hence a ton of inventory unsold and stuck in channel which likely was more expensive than usual so no heavy discounting. I doubt either AMD or Nvidia want to take the hit on that inventory by lowering prices and compensating channel for shifting it.

Also may be part of the reason behind the inflated pricing on newer cards.

But... when you have a massive oversupply, that's precisely when you have to cut prices to shift the goods, it's not like they'd lose money, they just wont get wildly overinflated margins. Then nVidia went and jammed all this useless junk circuitry on their next gen cards requiring giant fat expensive chips, at the same time they slapped 50% more expensive memory onto them, which is precisely the opposite of what consumers want. Here I'm stuck with an almost 5 year old GPU that's in need of being replaced so I can drive my shiny new 1440p adaptive sync display properly, but I'd have to shell out £700-800 to get a substantial performance bump. I think I'll wait until they catch themselves on. Fingers crossed for Navi.

Re: PC GPU market down sequentially and year-on-year

The trouble with them slashing prices on the previous gen cards is that everyone who needs an upgrade buys one on the cheap and there's nobody left to buy the next gen.

That's probably why Nvidia released that GDDR5X 1060 part that was a heavily cut down 1080. They made a bit less on the 10 series stock but they *really* didn't want to saturate any of the high-end market that might have shelled out for a 2080 (Ti).

But they can't sell them. There's no use piling up a whole load of stock at a price point hardly anyone wants. They're still going after fat margins like we're still in the middle of the mining boom, but that market is dead as a doornail.

Depends on the margins available, plus Nvidia is accountable to their shareholders so they better have a damn good reason for partially reimbursing for stock that is sat in channel that they've already banked. I doubt you'll see significant reductions (if any at all) on older stock until the stock levels are essentially so low it becomes the point that it'll end up being written off, likely it'll be at the retailers expense and not at Nvidia's depending on contracts etc.

The 10xx series is old, the 20xx series is expensive (comparatively speaking) and AMD is floundering in the background while everyone waits.

Well...I didn't say it had worked. Companies seem to tie themselves in all sorts of knots when they know their new product isn't really that much of an upgrade. Numerous phone manufacturers over the last few years come to mind...

Please define. Does this mean chips that they've made and sold to a board manufacturer but haven't made it to a consumer?

Crazily expensive high end and deeply confusing middle makes me uncertain what to upgrade to, despite being overdue an upgrade. for now I'm buying nothing and will make do rather than spend more on something I'm unsure is sensible and suitable.

I honestly think that the 1660ti is at a great value that when amd come to release their next line of cards, they may compete at price and performance but people who own the card now have the benefit of it now. I can't see a sub 250 card coming in from amd at =/> the 1660ti. Otherwise AMDs whole product stack would be baked

That's what I did. And then I saw a cheap Vega64. I was prepared to be priced out of PC gaming. It's not that I can't afford it, I can. It's that I WILL NOT pay these silly prices. Every hobby has a value to the person and we're getting very close to the financial cost exceeding the value I place upon PC gaming. Add to that the kinds of games I like look like they may be ditching single player and going MP only and that'll be me done.

With how much I use my PC working from home almost any GPU upgrade is a bonus but it is still cost vs performance. If I wanted a bargain right now it would have to be the vega 56's that have been on offer recently with 3 games for ~£250
