i think the fact that windows 10 still accepts windows 7 and 8/8.1 licenses to activate it still has helped largely and i hope it continues until after windows 7 ceases. in my eyes it was a very good decision not to close that particuler legal activation route - i have used licenses that haven't activated as well and it soon tells you if its valid or not.
I also wonder how many PCs would be using windows 10 and live but can't because updates have killed the PC? I know one guy who has to manually re-install a load of drivers after some updates. Something which would be far beyond the average PC user and many would not bother with the hassle and just buy a new PC.
The reason there's a leadership hole at Windows is because Microsoft don't care much about Windows anymore, when Nadella took over the reigns they became a mobile-first, cloud-first, company and Windows became a bit of an afterthought.
None of my devices are included in those figures.

To be fair negative people have never really kept updating software. We are down to one pc on Win 7 and nthat will be upgraded soon simply because I have run out of reasons not to upgrade...
I have had zero problems really with Win 10. The odd update not working here and there but nothing that wasn't pretty easy to get past. I do use better quality bits of hardware than most though - no cheap tat attached and wondering why it doesn't work right here. Also, for good or worse I have only radeon cards installed which means I can spot an issue and decide how to go about fixing it before it impacts things. Also, we only have one pc that doesn't boot from ssd now as well. That is the single biggest improvement for any pc, it just makes them far nicer to work with

I'm not sure there's much correlation between how many people use something and if a company cares much about a product.
Don't get me wrong I'm not saying Microsoft have given up on Windows or that their suddenly going to stop developing Windows, I'm saying that it get a lot less attention within Microsoft than it used to, that it's a means to an end and that end is mobile-first, cloud-first.
It's still my strong belief that Windows will eventually become a subscription based OS much in the same way as Office 365 is, that it will introduce more mobile orientated stuff and more cloud based stuff, that people will get a basic OS for free and can subscribe if they want the added 'extras'.
Might be due to the fact you can't buy a new PC without bloody Win 10 on it.
Apple fans might disagree! And seeing as Win 8 is dead in the water what else would they put on it? Win 7 - yeah that's end of life soon as well. Can't understand that statement at all, you've always had the latest version of Windows on new PC's why would you put an older version on? And if you don't need windows then don't buy a pre-built pc, simples

If you didn't want enforced updates potentially breaking your machine, you might put an older version which still has security updates coming through on there.
Personally, when my Mac breaks I'm VERY tempted to buy another Mac. I just do not like the idea of relying solely on Windows machines as I can't trust it. Yes there is Linux but that still doesn't have the full Office suite, etc all ready. It's a level of nerd I am just not willing to put into something that I want to just work. Apple generally does that whilst proving enough user friendliness to fix any issues without learning to code.

I might be wrong but doesn't OSX also force updates? If not explicitly then through constant nags and removal of support until you do it?
