The Ryzen 5 3600 is the better buy
I ordered my 3700X yesterday and I honestly cannot wait to get hold of it! Am I also correct in thinking there should be performance gains with windows updates to come etc from these CPU's as they're brand new?
AMD need to sort out Ryzen 3 boosts, either stop claiming boost speeds are double what anyone without sub-ambient cooling can achieve (bit late to change that now) or make boosting more aggressive so customers with decent cooling can actually reach the advertised boost clocks.
Think I'll stick with my 1600x for now.
I'm still torn between the 3600 and 3700X (little difference now, but might be in future?), but 3600X is more money for no real gain
Deffo going Ryzen this build but might go for a 2600X as they're cheap. Mind you might have enough budget for a 3600....
It's the memory I want that's brutal - 32 gig of 3200 ain't cheap
Old puter - still good enuff till I save some pennies!
Those wanting more core performance may be more tempted to get the 3700x and higher. Personally I figured I'd go the value root. My thinking was that if I want to spend less now, I can spend more when ddr5 and am5 as well as other technologies is more mature and will probably have a bigger upgrade path, pcie4 probably won't be as useful until then so I can save on the board too. Or I can choose to keep it longer since it seems capable regardless. Finally in 1-3 years there will be options to upgrade with discounts of current gen parts. The 3600 looks to be the best value in my eyes.
The one problem is that I have the recommended tomahawk motherboard and some are facing issues with that, so I'm putting off the build later this week and hoping for a bios update. There's also MAX models of msi boards for a bigger bios chip since current models are pushing towards the total capacity for the BIOS.
It is tricky. If the 3600 is enough for the next year or two, then by the time it starts running out of grunt you can replace it at the same cost with a 4600 or even a 3800X which should be really cheap by then. Given the 3700X is nearly twice the cost of a 3600 you could basically end up with a free CPU.
I bought the 3700X, don't really regret it but if I I'm honest with myself the 3600 would have been just fine. Instead I'll wait for nVidia's jump to 7nm and upgrade the GPU then.
Finally read the review. The memory tests are interesting; the way the copy test isn't hurt by the write performance shows how posted write performance doesn't really matter.
I look forward to the missing parts being reviewed. 3800X would be most interesting, I think we already know the 3600 (non-X) is the clever choice but when was the clever choice ever any fun?

^ 2600/2600x is great value since the price drop.
Yeah, I've gone for the 3700x too. But, ah, heck, value is relative. for me, personally, I figured I could justify that (and it wouldn't be too hot and therefore cause noise) vs the 3900x. Such a tricky one, this value thing
