From an 'upgrade' standpoint, for me personally it would be better to go threadripper because if they follow existing ones the motherboards should have 8 memory slots, which is a good thing for me personally.

Starting at 24 cores means it's likely a £1000 chip though....

Remember there'll be two new board ranges, the TRX 40/80 so you can pick and choose between 4 and 8 channels of RAM. I think that's a fantastic way of making entry level HEDT platforms because if you buy a 32 core with TRX40 and move onto projects that need shed tons of memory, then boom new mobo and you have RAM for days.

I would very much like to know the difference between the TRX80 and the WRX80. Most of the X399 boards were impressive but as of the Ryzen 3rd gen mobo vendors really started taking AMD seriously and made really gucci boards. I hope the new Threadripper ranges get the same treatment!

I am just hoping new Threadrippers will drop into my TR4 motherboard, and then when price are okay for me i will be so ready to update from 12/24 to say 32/64 cores.
I will be fine with the target 64Gb ram in the 8 sockets on my current motherboard ( aorus extreme )
But i will probably have to look at current TR processors, the new ones will be too expensive for my taste.

Didn't know about 2 board options... I'd still pick one with 8 slots though, leaves me with 4 spare (I'd assume they'd work on 4channels even if it has 8) even with 64GB ram but might start looking into it a bit more, I've got time before I upgrade and I keep going back and forward on waiting till the next update as it's only about a year away on some charts...

As much as I'd love one of those new shiny 64/128 core epyc cpu's on the desktop I don't think I'd make use of it enough (3D rendering etc) to warrant the cost increase over the lower tier ones, especially with gpu rendering etc coming into play more. Now ram on the other hand, I kind of feel I can never have enough lol... at the rate things are going some of my programs, primarily due to companies not optimising things, will be probably recommending 32GB+ ram in the 'near' future... hell I'm half expecting MS to come out at some point and say office needs 16GB ram just to run lol
