while in the grand scheme of things £2.2m is quite low, any "normal" person would be fired if they cost their company £2.2m on a project that could have been avoided by asking their grandchildren whether they thought it would work.

Careful now, I definitely read that this was the 'highest payment' so there was definitely more spent that this, it was just a case that 2.2m was the maximum single expenditure.

I take the point, but when this was first raised I asked a 12-yr-old relative "in strict confidence ..... "do you think this will work?"

The answer, and this is verbatim "No way. Just use a VPN".

This a not a 12-yr-old computer whizz-kid either.

Turned out it had been mentioned at school, and the class computer whizz said "Use a VPN" then explained what, why and how.


What the gov't perhaps should have done, before spending however many millions, was not to consult expensive IT consultancies (with or without vested interests in the project) but rather, ask their kids or grandkids.

As the saying goes .... out if the mouths of babes.

It may not be as bad as it could have been, but that money could still have been more useful somewhere else if they had listened to the obvious flaws with the idea that were pointed out by many people as soon as it was announced.

Just a suggestion - I know the Brexit waste of money thing was clearly light hearted but do be careful. I stopped reading Trusted Reviews because they started down this path and ended up basically saying half the population were racist bigots... and I didn't want heavy handed politics in tech articles when I was trying to escape politics.

Clearly light hearted for now, but do be careful you don't go alienating not only half your readership but also those like me who really don't want politics everywhere they go.

Of course if you want to tell me to sod off, it's your website and you'll do and say what you damn well please.... go right ahead.

EDIT: Oh and the idea that they say that they've only wasted a few million..... these people really do need lessons on the value of money.
