8 pin power connector on a card tested at around only 130W doesn't exactly inspire confidence
A 6 pin connector would give 75W from the x16 slot and another 75W from the 6 pin connector for a total of 150W leaving just 15% margin. OK there should be some margin in those power connector specs, but assuming these are likely to be used on low end motherboards that may struggle to route that 75W via the 24 pin connector, that feels a bit close. So to me it feels like being able to completely satisfy the card's power requirements from an 8 pin 150W cable is a good thing.
OFC it could be that an XT version of the card actually needs it, uses the same PCB, and they just bunged the same connector on here because it is what they had. Perhaps once the cards start rolling out in real quantity and the penny pinching starts we will get a 6 pin version.
