I'll stick to Windows XP, thank you very much And if that fails, I can always go back to Windows 98 for some gaming

Re: Microsoft prepares full screen nag for Windows 7 holdouts

For anyone that wants to pre-stop the nagging

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\EOSNotify]
    "DiscontinueEOS"=dword:00000001

    OR

    REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\EOSNotify" /v DiscontinueEOS /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

    And finally

You can also delete 2 tasks in the Task Scheduler called:
    "EOSNotify" and "EOSNotify2"

While this is fair and I'd expect anyone capable of the above to know their OS is going out of support and be able to judge and mitigate the risks I don't think this bag is a bad idea.

Joe Public needs making aware that their PC is about to become more vulnerable to any new attack vectors discovered after EOL.

Your OS will always be vulnerable, maybe less, if stil supported, but still vulnerable regardless of patches...

I was purposely vague with lack of detail or instruction
Joe Public will unlikely have a clue what any of that means, or how to implement it. The ones that do will be able to make up their own minds. Though I've kind of figured over the years Hexus members are on the more techie side

Re: Microsoft prepares full screen nag for Windows 7 holdouts

We are told the screen will be visible above all your windows "until you interact with it".
I know what my "interaction" with this nag would be, if I got it. Which I won't.

It requires the employment use of 'st' instead of 's'.
Also, if you're going to fix other peoples' posts, you should ensure your own response is absolutely perfect... including grammar, punctuation, capitalisation, and so on. It's hard to justify being smug about it, otherwise!

But anyway, I have yet to find anyone who can explain why Linux would be a worthwhile alternative for me... I'm sure it's great, but it just doesn't do what I want.

Re: Microsoft prepares full screen nag for Windows 7 holdouts

MS is damned if they do, damned if they don't in this situation....

While I'm sure there are people out there that would prefer MS to never stop supporting windows 7, it is at the end of the day a 10 year old OS, and well MS have moved onto a new 'business model' for the OS with windows 10.

MS also need to add something into the OS to let non tech savvy people know their OS will no longer be supported and while this nag screen is annoying, it's basically the only option MS has to guarantee it's let people know and stop any people suing etc, because you just know in the US someone would sue if MS just stopped support without telling people...

If people want to stick with windows 7, MS are now making it clear that it's ultimately down to the user to ensure their pc is secure and if any problems do crop up it's not their problem now... unless of course you're a big business that can pay for individual support.

Re: Microsoft prepares full screen nag for Windows 7 holdouts

I actually had an update for Windows 7 last night for the first time in ages. After booting today, I waited around half an hour but it stayed stuck on the 'waiting to configure' screen, before I got bored and reset. Literally no hard disk activity, so nout was going on. Update failed and rolled back. Typical. That's the problem with MS, even when they do updates, they often end up causing problems. The amount of times I've seen Win10 machines at work get stuck during updating is endless. I'm tempted to update my fathers PC to Win10, but tbh, I'm more concerned about it screwing up the install, or not accepting the key on the case, than any actual 'fear' of Windows 10 like some people have.

Re: Microsoft prepares full screen nag for Windows 7 holdouts

That's one of the major reasons some people here 'fear' W10 .... though speaking for myself I don't "fear" it at all. What I do do is reject it utterly for several reasons that, for me at least, are perfectkg rational. and one of them is, and always has been, MS usurping my right to decide when and indeed if, I update, and largely for that exact reason.
