I dread to think what they'd cost, though...!!

Probably too costly, two 4 TB RAIDs will cost less than just one 8TB.
I'd kill for just a budget 4tb NVMe. Doesn't need to be 3gb/s or owt like that hell I'd settle for half that because after getting an M.2 it's made me realise how pointless they are for gaming over SATA. But having a 4tb NMVe, strip down to a much smaller, quieter, and cooler case with no HDDs, no SATA drives, just a tiny box I can tuck away somewhere, and finally have some silence. That'd be awesome.
sata's are fairly easy to tuck away and ALL ssd's are silent, until they fail; then the air is filled with Blue anglosaxon Idioms.
1tb is affordable now, 2tb is getting there, 4tb must be on the horizon with Penta-level SSD?
Yeah but considering the price difference between SATA and M.2 isn't all that much, I'd rather pay the bit extra and go M.2. Feels almost daft now getting SATA while M.2 is like an extra tenner or so
At our level thats true but when you go to multi-terabyte drives NVME is restricted in the number of chips 4 on each side giving max of 8 . its also about whether QLC or PLC is good enough for your needs, for movies storage its fine, WORM, but hi thruput daatabase not-so-much.
