That's just what I was thinking. My PC's barely able to meet minimum VR requirements let alone do a good job... I could almost replace my whole machine with something medium to high end (Ryzen 3600 with 5600 GPU) for that sort of money.

However, we have just had Christmas and (IIRC) a Black Friday/Cyber Monday thing, so maybe that's a factor?

Mine will do alright, as I understand it, but remember that only my PSU and my w/c kit was brand new. Everything else inside my case was second hand, and at impressively low prices. The case itself was the payment for a job I did, as was the monitor, and my SSD was only funded as a result of someone failing to kill me with their car.
Point is, people don't always get the srubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishiest top end kit brand new, or they scrimp in some areas so they can afford others. People also have other sources of income and funding that aren't necessarily 'disposable' in the official sense, from insurance claims to scratchcard wins, or just outright savings. I could just about buy one of these HMDs with what I have saved up over this past year, for example.

I was strongly considering buying one of these in the future, but I'm going to cancel Half Life Alyx now too.

I will stick with my Oculus and original touch controllers at that price. Yes specs are better but not so much better to justify the cost.

I fixed your statement (seriously though, the only thing holding the cosmos back is the tracking issues and i'm pretty sure that's all software based and could be fixed/improved given time)

Fair enough its probably more me having young kids means I never have any disposable cash no matter how much I earn as a software dev (and I am paid fairly well - Not quite Reading levels but ok for Southampton). One day maybe between supporting my kids through uni and buying their first house I might???

Given my understanding of these games, I'm still unconvinced that it couldn't be done with a head tracker and a couple of Wii controllers. I mean sure, I can see the lure of VR, but I can see the lure of a luxury yacht - doesn't mean either are a reasonable way to spend your cash.

So simply, I won't buy Alyx - but I'm a little butt-hurt that they're using such a highly iconic game (HL) to drive sales. I do have concern that some people will be fooled by it and spend money they really shouldn't be - seems irresponsible.

I also have a young child, but without benefit of being paid above the national average. Location is not a factor in salary, at least in the Civil Engineering/Utilities industry (leaving out the obvious London weighting).

Don't get me wrong, this thing is VERY expensive and a serious load of cash for what it ultimately is... but those in our situations who really want something usually find ways, even if it's skipping meals, buying used kit or just setting aside a few quid each month for a couple of years.

I'd buy one, just for Elite... and maybe a few flight sims. I already dropped a couple hundred quid on a decent HOTAS.

It could certainly be done cheaper, and possibly to the same (or a higher) standard... the problem is that the Valve and Oculus products need to sell well enough for there to be a viable market, to attract other investors and other projects to compete, as well as enough content to play on these things.
Right now it's still very niche, in the grand scheme of things.

I'm doing the same - although I have considered picking up a Rift S for the room scale tracking without sensors all over the place.

I'd be nervous about dropping nearly a grand on an index without trying one on - the OG HTC Vive was incredible uncomfortable and had horrible controllers, and whilst it does look like Valve have learned from the rift and basically copied the controllers/design, its hard to tell without giving it a try IRL.

Still, I suspect Alyx will work fine on my rift so i'll give it a try there first and then see if i really need to upgrade or not I think
