The world's most powerful weather device hey? Does it look like one of these?

By the end of the 10 year implementation period...
It will already be wildly out of date.

I suspect a large chunk of Yorkshire and south Wales would (justifiably) prefer 1.2bn to be spent on flood defences.

It is great that the Met Office can predict these storms, and it definitely saves lives because people know not to travel etc, but equally its small comfort for those who have been flooded out two / three times in six months

    He means somewhere not wet.

So no Lib Dem areas either.

    *ducks*

(I hear they like the wet, too - will the next Lib Dem leader be a Mallard?)

Didn't the met office get an upgrade about a year or two ago, I remember it well because the forecasts where miles off for months (guess no one knew how to use the darn thing?).

what's that sketch with the scientists at an expensive computer screen predicting the weather should be good to an accuracy of <0.1% but the person sticks their head out the window and says "nope, definitely raining"...?

    Just like Irien said really.
The Calder valley is a right mess; AGAIN!
For a change, stuff the new tech and use a bit of old tech to sort out the flood defences for once and all.

Yes not familiar with UK lingo for the parties over there, not even the Danish ones, i just call them all idiots.

It would be stupid to build a computer that's supposed to forecast floods, and the have it get flooded like so many bitcoin farms in China a while ago.

Or use the money to buy out people's properties, help people move, and let new flood plains (and in some cases, old flood plains) establish themselves.

Instead, where I used to live...

They allow planning permission on floodplains with the rider that there must be adequate flood protection for the new houses. This effectively removes the flood protection from the existing houses in the area, so houses that were never at flood risk are now officially on the floodplain.

It is benevolent to remember that when "Gambling"/Futurizing, "Gamble Responsibly". You know, when "drinking"/alcoholize-ing/Being-Made-UnAware, "Drink-Responsibly". This is how "The-Averaged-Joey/Joel" is soo far "Up-The-Goolies", that he/she is "UnAble to Determine What is Night and What is Day" - other than to "Gamble-Responsibly".

There is a place for "Robotize-ing" but it is NOT for changing/turning "The-Living" into "The-Living-but-Dead", The Robotic-Bookie being "Tojo-Inc.". But then, we all "Gottas Have A Job"? But will anyone be prepared-to become A-Robot to "Get-A-Life?""Powar To-Yer Muskles", indeed.

Re: UK invests £1.2bn in world's most powerful weather supercomputer

People here desperately trying to save their summer houses on the western part of Jutland from falling into the sea, have just been fined for throwing lots of big granite stones on the sand beach.
The north sea take a big bite of Denmark every winter if nothing are done, and nothing is all that is to be done if the area are deemed protected. and so the summer houses people paid good taxes on for a long time, as a thank you are turned into rubble on the beach,,,,,, rubble that will probably be removed at the expense of the former owner.

Needless to say taking part of the democratic process here are very difficult for a person like me, but the last election i was finally able to vote due to 2 new parties ( which i have little faith in ) but at least they are not the old failed parties who i will never vote for.
