I have to say I just loaded 12 cores at 4GHz sustained for over and hour and peaking at 75C during folding at home whilst drawing ~110W. So my new Ryzen 3900X is probably up there.
Beyond that, my Soundblaster AWE32 always evokes memories of utter component insanity.
The Good: Voodoo 2
The Bad: Slot 1 Pentium II

Radeon HD2900Pro. 50% GPU Clock Overclock... It was crazy, crazy days. I didn't have it for that long, a couple of years, but it was such a joy and a bargain.
64Gb M225 Crucial SSD.
The move from HDD probably had the quickest biggest impact for me.
Grab that. Get that. Check it out. Bring that here. Grab anything useful. Take anything good.
Saitek force feedback joystick paired with IL2...
Just made for a great game at the time with my system and the joystick - and the joystick is still going strong!
Old puter - still good enuff till I save some pennies!
CPU upgrades and better graphics are all incremental improvements depending on how much you spend so I'm going for SSD too - a step change, however for sheer convenience, getting a front bay USB 3 thing for my old FT01 case (which is excellent and I'll keep it forever) was cheap, easy and memorable!
Oh, also getting my first decent cpu cooler - a Scythe Mugen and a decent Corsair PSU. Things got much quieter.

The good:
Akasa apache fans - sooo silent
Gigabyte GTX460SOC 1GB. GTX470 performance from a 460chip and SILENT soo SILENT throughout. Still running it now.
There's a theme here...
The bad:
Nvidia FX5200 horrendous graphics card. Better as a space heater IMO.
My first mesh PC. Noisy, stuttery, BSOD ahoy. Did complete half life on it though, so not a complete disaster
The meh moneywaster:
asetek fan controller that did....nothing discernable at all
the bluray drive that has only ever played... DVDs (doh!)
Gravis Ultrasound. The only way to play the original DooM game!
That'd have to be the first upgrade i did on my first PC:
AMD K6-2 333mhz 64MB RAM prebuilt system, with what turned out to be one of the worst motherboards in existence(PCChips, luckily long dead a manufacturer
)
It's onboard GPU was epically bad (onboard 8MB SIS garbage), for example quake ran at least twice the framerate under software mode (though 3dnow AMD extensions helped) than it did with hardware rendering...
First upgrade was a S3 savage4 gpu with 32mb RAM, but the PCI version (because said motherboard)
Was such an incredible upgrade for gaming in one go, nothing has ever come close to that jump
Very good: ATi Radeon All-in-Wonder, Radeon RX 580, Microsoft Intellimouse Optical, my first SSD from Sandisk, the massive Apple Extended Keyboard II with Alps switches.
Memorable: Gravis Utrasound, Danmere Backer
An AMD FX-8370, OC to 4.2GHZ base.
it was so hot running it literally heated up my room.
went to Intel for cooler operation at the same perf, and now ironically am going back to AMD for same reason.
Most memorable: Ensoniq Soundscape Elite
Would like to forget: IBM Deathstar 75GXP
AMD Barton 2500+ - Had that CPU for longer than any other (I think)...
Bad i.e. Corsair Commander refusing to get more than 3 HD120 fans alight. Ongoing troubleshooting with Corsair for months and still ONLY 3 will light up.
