I do really like the elgato product range...I use their streamdeck both in my normal office worklflow and for streaming, the keylight air is a really nice bit of kit and CamLink does what i's meant to.

I'm not convinced by this mic though - it seems very similar to Razors effort and it's going to be completely useless out of the box for streaming games (although likely fine for voice recording) given that you just get a basic desk mount out of the box, and then it's a further £40 for the shock mount, plus another £40-£80 if you stay with their kit and get a multi mount so you can have this off your desk - which is critical for game streaming. (Seriously, try it on your desk - no amount of noise gating & audio tweaking can get rid of the bounce & keyboard clicks!)

So that makes the real entry cost in the £200 region, which gets you into Blue Yeti X or Rode territory, which then give you more pickup patterns, flexibility etc. Remember the Elgato mics are cardioid only...

For an entry level streamer (like me!) who doesn't want to invest much, you can invest circa £70 on amazon for a Uhuhu or similar clone - which gives you everything in one kit (cardiod mic, shock mount, arm mount, pop shield, wind shield) and is honestly all you need. I spent a fair amount of time doing my research, and went for that setup in the end - and honestly it's amazing for the money. Better sounding than Razer's effort, much better than a blue snowball, and on par with a standard blue yeti for cardioid....but most of all, it just works.

This may be one of the first Elgato products that kind of misses the mark. It will still sell like crazy because of it's brand - regardless of whether it's actually any good on it's own!

One thing you should also consider is the software side of this microphone. Elgato are pushing their Wave Link application quite hard, and plan to bring big upgrades over time, which is where people might find a lot of value.

Voicemeeter Banana & Virtual wires are both free though, and offer more functionality & a basic mode that does pretty much the same thing. It doesn't seem to offer anything particularly fancy or groundbreaking.

I don't think this will be a bad product necessarily - just that there will be better options for the money, and it sits in a bit of an odd place in the market.

Can't wait to find out how they artificially crippled microphones via software like they already did with every single model of their capture cards. Only works with their tool and only lets you pick whatever settings they let you perhaps?
