I was shocked at the pricing when I checked scan.. though I've heard rumblings that this *some* of this price increase may be because of Human Malware? Any confirmation on that?

Edit: B450 boards seem to be getting re-stocked on Amazon, I'm wondering if their prices will start to rise.

I still don't follow. He's saying the B550 boards are expensive because someone mentions Covid in a video? You've lost me!

    Sorry, he's saying:

"Boards are expensive because of Covid."

I was trying to say where the expression came from. Type fast, type twice

Re: Asus TUF Gaming B550M-Plus WiFi

Have built 2 B450 systems this week. Board prices are up slightly but the B550 boards are a fair amount higher than I'd like
I can see the advantages but quite often the price difference is just not worth it... I'd rather spend/advise that a B450 board with the extra spent on a decent nvme ssd is the way to go

I think its more along the lines of "boards are more expensive right now as a result of the ongoing impact of coronavirus on the supply chain, and the associated knock on costs of the final product". Or something along those lines.

What is the point of a £185 B550,when you can get a cheaper £90 B450,and use the extra to get a faster CPU??

You'll struggle to run a 12 or 16 core Ryzen safely on a B450 board. Whilst that's an unlikely situation now, if in a few years time it's possible people might want to pair a second-hand high core count CPU with a B450 board. B550 boards have much better VRMs capable of supporting higher core cpus now (with the exception of cheaper Asrock B550 boards, apparently).

Re: Asus TUF Gaming B550M-Plus WiFi

Comparing with only two other boards from the same generation seems kind of pointless to me. Many of us would like to know how it performs vs the previous generations, like a B450 and if it's worth the 100+% price premium over it. Should we just blame it on Covid or is just AMD pulling an Intel on the consumers now that they have the upper hand?

So my mate who has a Ryzen 9 3900 on a MSI B450 Tomahawk Max,who is running video transcoding on the system,is making it up??

You can get a Ryzen 9 3900 and an MSI X470 Gaming Max Plus for £430:
    https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/amd...awd-it-3483501

A Ryzen 7 3700X and a MSI B450 Tomahawk can be had for the same price as Ryzen 5 3600 and the overpriced B550 motherboard in this review(around £340~£350). The thing is when you are on a budget, sometimes you also need to have balance in your component choices. So if you overspend on the motherboard and have a fixed budget, you spend less on the CPU,and then will have to upgrade earlier. A Ryzen 7 3700X or Ryzen 9 3900 owner, will be keeping their CPU longer than a Ryzen 5 3600!

People need to appreciate how efficient Zen2 is - the Ryzen 7 3700X consumes as much power as a Ryzen 5 2600!The Ryzen 9 3900 consumes as much power as a Ryzen 7 3700X.

The Ryzen 9 3900X/3950X power consumption varies from slightly less than a Ryzen 7 2700X to slightly more than one, dependent on the benchmarks run. It works fine on a decent B450 or X470 motherboard at least at stock clockspeeds.Unless you really want to fiddle with Ryzen,it runs at 95% its maximum performance out of the box,and memory tweaking makes more sense.

Ignore that video from Hardware Unboxed,as they fiddled with things and it contradicts their previous videos:
    https://forums.hexus.net/cpus/371038...ml#post4222942

I actually went through their charts.

They suddenly went from their B450 Tomahawk with a Ryzen 9 3950X running at under 70C full load under Blender in a case with good ventilation,to a Ryzen 9 3900X with PBO enabled, running at nearly 90C in the same case, with a better MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon. They themselves said a decent B450 would be fine with a Ryzen 9 3950X,and now apparently the Ryzen 9 3900X won't work. This is because they used a large radiator ,and not only did it block some of the intake air,but it also recirculated some hot air back into the case. Run a decent air cooler on the CPU and it will actually push additional air over the VRMs. This is why stock coolers are horizontal ones,ie,they push air over the VRMs and the ones which come with the Ryzen 9 3900X/3950X are equivalent to a CM Hyper 212 IIRC.

So my advice is to actually to try and work on the case airflow - if a system can't handle a Ryzen 9 3900X in terms of heat, its going to find it even harder to manage any GPU from the RX5600XT/RTX2060 upwards as these will be worse.

My mate had one the MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon with a overclocked Ryzen 7 2700 with 3300MHZ RAM with an overclocked IMC(easily as much power consumption as a stock Ryzen 7 2700X). The motherboard had no problems at all,and a Ryzen 9 3900X at stock is going to be fine in it,especially as it appears newer Zen2 CPUs seem to run at a lower voltages, than the review samples many websites use, which are early production batches.

The only thing is maybe top models of Zen3 might be massive power hogs like the Intel CPUs. However,I find it hard to think AMD won't have models with 65W TDP,etc as I doubt OEMs,etc want to spend £185 on a basic mATX motherboard.

The £185 B550 motherboards are just too overpriced, and the ones which need to be tested are the ones closer to £100. Adding £80~£100 over a B450,and you might as well get a Ryzen 7 3700X now,and hold out until the Ryzen 5000 series on 5NM,and with DDR5!

Youtube has been actively demonitising videos which mentioned the Covid 19 or Coronavirus in an effort perhaps to discourage videos promoting conspiracy theories.
However it hit videos making a mention of it for more honest reasons.
And so one of the viewers of the channel Gamers Nexus, coined the term Human Malware which has since been used regularly by Steve Burke of Gamers Nexus, and also other tech channels since.
So someone mentioning Human Malware simply means Covid 19 or Coronavirus as described on that, or other youtube channels.

Rubbish! Easily run anything on a B450 board. They require far less power than equivalent Intel chips even when boosted. Even the high end high core count chips run easily....
This PC is a Ryzen 7 2700 and uses less than 300 watts in normal use with a Radeon R9. I built a system just before lockdown and was much easier to cool than an Intel system someone else required despite have 16c32t and the Intel system being 8c16t and pulled about 25% less power through the wall most of the time.

The 3900X machines we bought at work from PC Specialist were based on an ASUS B450 board. They seems fine.

Having said that, we recently built a 3950X machine and for that I specced an X570. Ironically for this thread, the X570 didn't seem to add much cost to the build vs a B450. Not compared to the incremental cost of a high end 1TB M.2 SSD vs a cheap one.

I see Amazon have some B550 boards now for £135, but the eqivalent B450 board is £70 so they are asking double. The VRMs look similar at a quick glance, none of the boards have VRM heatsinks and look to be a basic 4+2 layout. Seems expensive, but then I thought when mid range GPUs soared up from the old £140 price point that it wouldn't last so what do I know
