    Athlon 64 FX-51

    Yep, we got one just like everyone else. FX-51 is todays flavour (more to come soon), Tarinder was the lucky recipient of the AMD press kit. Here's a snip.

    It's difficult to ascertain the 64-bit qualities of the FX-51 right now. Limited OS support and limited driver support make any tentative benchmarking perilous. I'll leave that up to Mr. Technical, a.ka Ryszard. What we can say, though, is that in 32-bit mode, the Athlon FX-51 currently has no performance peer. Thanks to a number of sensible core improvements, of which an on-die memory controller, larger L2 cache and SSE2 support are notable, especially with respect to gaming. The AMD Athlon64 FX-51 is a force to be reckoned with. It'll be hugely expensive, but that's kind of expected. We'd put our money on a cheaper model in the hope of overclocking it to FX-51 levels and above. We can't recommend the FX-51 solely due to its mammoth price, which is reckoned to be around £700, but if you want the fastest x86 CPU going, this is it.

    Very Very impressive.

    All very technical and I really only took in about half of it but none the less the 32bit/64bit hardware compatiblity could prove to be a mini stroke of genius. But the names ? - agghh!

    looks like AMD finally have a CPU to price next to intel's best without looking a little silly...some very, very impressive scores in there, looks like athlon 64 might live up to the hype!

    HELL YEAH!

    Think I'll wait for the 939 pin Athlon FX and see if a 2.4 / 2.6Ghz FX comes by then.
    I hope the prescott is a failure like willamette as AMD seem to have found the best, scalable CPU to date. (I'm not an AMD fanboy *honest!*)

    Did you get the "2 x 512MB Legacy Electronics DDR400 ECC/Registered memory" from anywhere in the UK?

    @ Rochdale - Nope, 1Gbyte arrived with the AMD press kit. I'm not sure where you can purchase it from

    @ Fondie - One should be arriving in the next couple of days. It should make for an interesting comparison.

    I have another, more interesting CPU here currently. A 754-pin Clawhammer XP3200+ on an EPoX K8T800 board. It may only feature a single-channel memory controller, but it's mighty fast for a 2GHz CPU. Overclocked to 2.2GHz, it manages to equal the FX-51 in most gaming-related benchmarks. The clinching factor is that it's almost half the price and uses regular, unbuffered RAM.

    Those crunch times for SETI are WAY off.

    I don't know what kind of F-d up systems he was using, but my p43.06 w/533mhz FSB completes a WU with .417 angle range in 1 hour and 30 minutes with NO overclocking.

    a p43.2 w/800mhzFSB completes one in 1 hour 16 minutes.

    those times that he posted are so far off I wonder if he made them up.

    Go check ANY of the other benchmarks on other sites. You will see that the times are WAY different.

    Those times are perfectly correct. Tom's times are way off.

    The unit is the same as the one at OcUK

    Have a look at this table and decide for yourself how you can run a unit in 1 hour 16 minutes on a stock 3.2.

    Here's an excerpt from it:

    start_ra=22.673
    start_dec= 18.01
    end_ra=22.703
    end_dec= 18.01
    angle_range= 0.417
    time_recorded= 2451858.52267 (Fri Nov 10 00:32:38 2000)
    subband_center=1419740600.59
    subband_base=1419736328.12
    subband_sample_rate=9765.62

    If you want to run it, download it here and report back with your findings.
