Upgrades is the main reason, new machines I have been building with NVMe drives. Even the really cheap ones, the 250GB drives are only £50.

But most machines in the house here don't have an M.2 slot of any kind. Give it a couple of years and they will be retired.

Personally I'm using three SSDs in my main machine. One of them is NVME, but as far as I'm aware I don't have three NVME slots on the mobo.

When I build my next work pc (end of yearish depending on prices) my current plan is 3x m2 nvme (os, scratch and active projects) and then 2-3 of sata ssd's ('fast' storage) and maybe 2 hard drives (long term 'archival' type storage like texture maps etc). Now I might be a little bit outside the normal user but there's still use case scenarios for sata ssd's.

Now don't get me wrong I'm not going to spend the prices samsung are looking at for those large ssd's (I really feel ssd prices are being manipulated to stay high at the moment) but I would still like to go 'fully' ssd this time.

I think these are more HDD replacement drives so it's a tiny bit easier if the form factor is the same. Also my case is designed to cool SATA drives, nvme are all tucked away and certainly are not hot swappable.

It's getting to the point where I'm considering running a small, fast, nvme drive with a secondary SATA SSD for bulk storage.

I just see little point in a large capacity ssd when a large capacity hard drive will do the job just as well and for less cost. A boot nvme ssd with a hard drive seems the best for cost v performance for many people still

My large capacity drives tend to end up hosting virtual machines. My current spinning rust can do that, but even SATA SSD would be just *so* much better.

What I really want for work is some rack mount cases with 2.5in host swap drive cages in the front that I can plug extra drives into to increase storage. They tend to be rather out of my small company budget though (given I need three of them to start a Ceph storage pool).

I think it depends on what you use the hdd for storing as well.
I use my 2.5 SSD for dropbox work files as it really hammers the hdd when you sync new folders etc.

I host my VMs on an M2 SSD. It's great that I don't have to set them all loading and go and get tea. I can just load the VMs I need for the task at hand as I go along, as they boot so fast. They are so responsive from a decent SSD that my problem is I'm the one slowing things down as I don't have enough monitor real estate.

should be £100 for 1tb ... even thats allowing Samslung a profit. These drives are meant to be getting cheaper, not just bigger, No wonder the Chinese are eating their lunch in the cheap SAta SSD market (goldenfir etc etc) I want 2tb for £100 , thats a bargain. This is mass storage. thye
