Re: Intel details its 11th Gen desktop processor architecture

I Still can't see how overall performance would be superior to a 10900K, what with the loss of 2 cores 2 threads.

That would have to be a hell of an IPC jump for 8c 16t to overtake a 10c 20t CPU...

More likely that they couldn't keep a 10 core version cool enough to pass the tdp ratings and still run at over 3GHz

Re: Intel details its 11th Gen desktop processor architecture

    Honestly...meh.

Double digit improvements over what... last year or one of their older models like they've done in the past (sure one of the recent ones was versus skylake)

LOL at the bit about this announcement being a surprise, oh come on this is Intel trying to stay 'relevant' when AMD are basically showing them how to improve their cpu year on year...

Yup, Intel just shouting 'we are still here please pay us attention too' while actually saying nothing.

Maxing out at 8 cores? I look forward to AMD cutting their 8 and 12-core products in price then for Intel's launch.

Re: Intel details its 11th Gen desktop processor architecture

    Intel:

No mention of clocks, 4 less PCIe lanes than AMD and heralding it as an amazing thing even though people on AMD platforms have been doing it over a year and on both platforms for multiple years (standard users don't know the difference between storage bottleneck and their elbow), taglining an iGPU as being amazing when it's going into a desktop platform and only really being an MX350...

And it's up to 10% depending on workload.

    It can encode AV1? O.o

Re: Intel details its 11th Gen desktop processor architecture

Does anyone care or even use the intergrated gpu? if you have a desktop for anything other than office work, you have a dedicated graphics card!

think my next upgrade might be all AMD as the other two seem to be stood still and launching paper .

Have these 11th gen chips got hardware fixes for all those side attack issues, spectre etc?

Why are Intel still pushing the 14nm boat around..?

Are they simply not capable of shrinking stuff (are they still using just their own fabs?) or is it making things larger is cheaper and gives them better yields, think of it like Porsche and the 911, they've had the same design for ages and just tweak it to make it better?

Yes. AMD cards draw more power when using multiple monitors, it doesn't happen (for me) when using the IGP allowing the card to run with fans off. Not only that but using the second screen with the IGP whilst gaming means it has less impact on any games (again, in my experience).
Also, if it can encode AV1, it might be of use to streamers, IIRC Twitch has done some AV1 tests.

Edit: Reddit post seems to suggest Intel made a mistake on the slide, it should read decoders and not encoders. That makes more sense, shame.

10nm Superfin doesn't clock very high and is a very hot node, the benefits from Superfin aren't really in the node and in the architecture instead (think Haswell (IIRC that was a bad node jump and architecture initially)).

Intel 7nm is still a smoking wreck on the side of the road with Fire Engines still putting out the fire in the vain hope that one day it may drive again.

From the looks of things, Intel may be tapping either TSMC or Samsung for their Xe GPU lineup because Murthy Renduchintala screwed the pooch and from the looks of things was trying to perform a coup against Raja et al but he was fired and a reshuffle occurred earlier this year. Considering Raja is doing a big chat at one of Samsungs upcoming foundry talks I would suspect Intel is going with Samsung because TSMC laughed them out the door when Intel tried (obviously) to muscle themselves in on fab space. Just like Nvidia did with TSMC but they called Nvidias bluff when they said they'll go with Samsung then. Except when Nvidia was forced to go with Samsung on their 7NM EUV, obviously something happened because they then backported to an 8nm half node (Samsung 10-9nm) and everyone stopped banging the Samsung 7nm EUV drum.

Lord only knows what chaos is going on inside Intel right now but it's not looking good and we have to hope that Intel sorts themselves out because the gap between them and their foundry competitors (both Samsung and TSMC) is widening every month.

Xe-HPG is already back in the lab... reportedly built on tsmc n6.
Xe-LP DG1, SG1 already in production on intel 10SF. DG1 already advertised in some products.
Xe-HP back in the lab on intel 10ESF. Intel demoed a 4 tile 42 Tflop FP32.
Xe-HPC multi-components, some built at Intel, some externally.

It is very interesting how nobody gives Intel any credit for keeping up while still being stuck on 14nm. Imagine if they had their 7nm sorted out...
