I'll say it again - Steam surveys should be taken with a massive pinch of salt. Mainly laptops for many and a lot of mainly causal gamers affect the results greatly
I'd say the increase in serious gamers is much more than Steam says. Upwards of 40% in my own experience are now on Ryzens
Old puter - still good enuff till I save some pennies!
Not sure where they're getting their CPUs from, all new kit seems like rocking horse ****.
The question here is also value. AMD might well have a small market share but I bet it's mostly performance CPUs. Intel is now occupying the bargain basement - mid range category.
We are still in a situation where Intel dominates laptops and often is just the only choice you have. Hopefully AMD having the hardware will start working properly with OEMs to get these into machines. It has been said they are just too difficult to work with.
As for "funky VMs" you leave my weird bastardised machines alone!
Nearly 10% of the GPU survey is Intel so effectively Intel's non-integrated CPU share is down to 63%. Hard to tell on the AMD side as their 16.5% GPU share could be either integrated or not.
Still need a few years to turn the table, how the sales is going for Intel and AMD as of current is what show the story whenever it get to it... the turn over via gaming platforms takes longer to physically show, but the next one buying a PC and the likes since if stuck on Intel need to change motherboard anyway, is probably switching to AMD... but who knows.. there is hardcore fans for each brand, but as for self, I go with what is currently best and currently for me it would be AMD, I would like to see what they got to offer when I can get onto the DDR5 platform somewhere next year, start 2022 perhaps, last 3 PCs has been Intel inside.. now it seem like it is going to be AMD inside

My PC went Ryzen and I have helped spec/build 2 other PCs and they both wanted Ryzens before I even recommended it. I both cases they had a 3600 but a huge draw to them was there is better 3 series processors and the 5 series will also be available giving them upgrade options, both have been stung by the new processor=new board intel model in the past.
Of course this is a small sample but I guess many are seeing similar behaviour.
UNFORTUNATELY: AMD marketing department need to do more, many people out there are unaware if AMD exists. Even ordinary lads who have consoles are unaware the technology inside it is AMD.
Hell, AMD marketing dept. should have a couple of months off - then they might have actually made a product to need marketing.
I see the 3080 has captured .23% market share in it's first month.
Is it possible to filter those data and show only 6 cores and up for CPUs, and only dedicated GPUs?
Would be interesting to see that. Or maybe laptop vs desktop? Or only models that are 3 years old or newer?
The more you live, less you die. More you play, more you die. Isn't it great.
It would be amazing to chop and change the data to analyse it. I'd wonder what is the worst CPU that a 3090 has been hooked up to.
The fact that the changes are (kind of) small is just indicative of the market. The simple fact is that there aren't many people building - or even buying pre-built - desktops out there.
I'll still continue building, though!
As I've said in the past, there is nothing wrong with the Intel model of upgrading the entire rig every 5 - 6 years if you build it right in the beginning. If you've always been a budget builder, then yeah, I can understand why AMD would be so appealing.
Still using a Skylake i5 here and I think i'll make the switch to a 5800x setup when I can get some stock, haha.
