I'm intrigued by what they plan for people to do with it, it doesn't seem like it offers more than say a Quest other than the higher quality experience. I can't really see someone or even companies paying $3,000 for a high quality Quest, particularly if it also doesn't have the link capability of the Quest or that's limited by using Mac OS.

    Three grand??!!

I suppose that's one way to test customer loyalty/stupidity and see just how much they can get away with...

Re: Apple's ultra-high-end VR headset expected in 2022

Finally, some company, and as usual, Apple, is pioneering this technology.
People can finally get VR glasses that we talked about in so many SF novels and movies.

Apple is the most innovative company and always come with original ideas that no one before them thought of.

Their new M1 chip will be more than enough to power these two 8K screens inside it. Just pure Apple genius.
The more you live, less you die. More you play, more you die. Isn't it great.

Re: Apple's ultra-high-end VR headset expected in 2022

Well the LIDAR component sounds interesting, makes 3k "cheap" compared ot other devices using LIDAR sensors. I'd hazard a guess that this will be totally standalone, unlike the quest that is easy to tether to a powerhouse PC, so you'll be stuck with the walled garden app store and miss out on a lot of PC VR titles.

I'm hoping (nay, praying) that post was sarcasm. It strikes fear into my heart that people might actually believe any of that.

EDIT - I wonder how much the interchangeable straps will be? "Of course Sir, and would you like a green strap to protect your purchase? Made with only the finest dead slave skin. Only £420.69"

Nope - I don't think so. The M1 chip is better than sliced bread didn't you know. I guess telling someone that to drive 2 x 8k screens needs gpu grunt 8 times that to drive a 4k screen doesn't compute. Plus it needs to refresh at say 120 hz. So you'd need something like 4 x RTX 3080's really to do it justice

To be fair, the Quest 2 has a piddly little chip in it by PC standards but plays some very nice content at reasonably high resolution and an acceptable 90Hz. Lots of pixels could mean simple but very crisp graphics, with no need for anti aliasing. But then I would have thought 4K was more than enough for that.

OTOH perhaps they are counting each line has 2560 red pixels, 2560 green pixels and 2560 blue pixels added together and rounded up

Re: Apple's ultra-high-end VR headset expected in 2022

VR is dead at current prices, so how will 3K help? Useless, just like all VR for games. Medical has it's uses though and others too probably, just useless to me for gaming. I would NEVER wear scuba gear for gaming. If you could make these into google glass type style for $150, maybe we talk if there are dozens of great games out for it. To shell out 3k for VR...ROFL. Not even if I'm elon musk. Well, ok, at that point you can probably burn millions per day and never touch his principal. At 184B even at 5% he's making what like, ~10B yearly? If he had it all to invest that is, stuck in his company it rises and falls I guess (lost ~20B last week or so). But you get the point as even at 1B a year income you can blow ~3mil daily and never drop the balance on the rest of your money. I'd buy it if I had that much money to stupidly blow without affecting my life, otherwise...ROFLMAO. Wake me in 10yrs and ask again. I have seen no game I'd buy this for and most are short, expensive, crap. But I guess if you have 3K to drop on this dumb thing, you don't care that you just paid $60 for 1-5hr experience. Blah...Spend VR dev time on games we ALL can play and don't need a 3K facemask to play them. Did I mention masks are stupid for covid?

You do know that the Snapdragon XR2 used in the Quest 2 was built from the ground up to do VR and has loads of transistors for cameras etc. don't you? Piddling graphics wise I guess but not in processing power
