Is this a rare example of...competition actually working in the consumer's favour????
AMD announce resizeable BAR, which immediately triggers Intel & Nvidia to add support for their CPUs/cards, but supporting older CPUs also...so then AMD have to also open up support for the 3000 series.
I mean, this is just good news for all consumers regardless of your vendor of choice. win win for a change!
Why do you need a 500 series motherboard, when the Nvidia equivalent works fine on Intel CPUs,which use PCI-E 3.0?? Its even worse when the A520 is essentially a rebadged B450 - so more artifiicial product segmentation by AMD. So there is no need for PCI-E 4.0 I suspect.
Edit!!
The Nvidia equivalent works fine on AMD 400 series motherboards, but currently is only validated with Zen3 CPUs. If Nvidia gets this validated with Zen2 eventually,it would be hilarious.
so if I have 3900x x570 with RTX3070?
You don't get it with Nvidia yet,but its quite clear the support shouldn't be too hard to enable.
Firsly it does not require PCI-E 4.0,if Intel and Zen3 on 400 series motherboards work for Nvidia, and the A520 lacks PCI-E 4.0 anyway(a rebadged B450) so works fine for AMD too. So for both AMD and Nvidia, there is no requirement for PCI-E 4.0 supporting platforms.
It's also quite clear Zen2 must work,if AMD can support it on 500 series motherboards. It seems more chipset weirdness again.
Nvidia BAR works on Intel CPUs,which are locked to PCI-E 3.0,and ATM they list Zen3 as working fine in 400 series motherboards hence, meaning PCI-E 3.0 is fine. AMD says 500 series chipsets for Zen2,but A520 is locked to PCI-E 3.0,so its not PCI-E bandwidth at all here.It can't be a CPU issue,as Intel Cometlake works with Nvidia resizeable bar,and Zen2 with AMD SAM. It can't be a chipset issue as the 400 series chipset works with Nvidia, and Intel chipsets work fine.
Edit!!
What I am trying to point out is Cometlake,Zen2 and Zen3 all work with BAR/SAM and so do the 400/500 series AMD chipsets, and no PCI-E 3.0 is apparently required. It seems more like some arbitrary dividing lines here, and I suspect modders might get around it.

I suspect it is just down to testing, sometimes developing something and releasing it as a "big bang" where everything is in place from day 1 is just too hard. Usually you just ignore old kit for now, and maybe add support later as you get the chance and can prove it works just fine.
If nothing else, there seemed to be a game whitelist where the feature worked well enough to enable, and that whitelist could well be different for 3000 series vs 5000 series.
AMD already unlocked 400 series motherboards (including my X470 board), now they unlocked 3000 series CPUs so that's hopefully my 3700X. If they unlock Vega 56 cards, then that would be lovely. But then they need to unlock the combination of all three together?
If they just throw the switch and enable the feature across the board, there will be cases where performance drops and then people will be screaming about lousy drivers. even if you give them the ability to control it themselves.
Edit: Quick check, and Asus seem to be doing at least monthly updates on my old X470 board atm, including RTX 3000 series support and a new AGESA last month. If they keep that up, I could get another BIOS next week!
Got a 3700x, x570 and Vega56, would be interesting if they supported the vega cards with HBM2.
New tech needs compatible modern tech shocker.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.
So I have the 3600 and x570... Not sure my rx480 will benefit if they ever unlocked it though. By the time this GPU shortage ends I can hopefully take advantage!
