Re: Data from 533 million Facebook accounts leaked online

So will Facebook tell people whose accounts were affected? Or just leave people wondering if they should worry?

This is an excellent case for the EU GDPR but who wants to bet any money nothing happens...

4% of Facebooks Global revenue for 2019 would be around 2.5 Billion USD

Yeah, heard this yesterday. Also apparently the Zuck uses Signal and not Whatsapp... for privacy reasons obviously...

The leaked accounts were UK, US and India, post-Brexit none of them are in the EU

Oh I'm wrong 35 million Italian accounts 10 million Spanish accounts. I'm sure Facebook can hire good lawyers though who will plead that they don't really make any money and it's really just a philanthropic venture.

Wasn't the entire body of EU law taken on? GDPR still applies as far as I know. I doubt the EU courts would take them on but the UK ones certainly could if they violated GDPR.

to find out if your details have been taken enter your details on this totally trustworthy site...

that's genius. Find out who is paranoid about their details and simultaneously stupid enough to share them.

Haveibeenpwned has been around forever and is legit. Sign up with an email address and it'll alert you if you get found in a breach. He added the mobile number check due to demand from this leak (which I recall had been revealed waaaay before now?)

Re: Data from 533 million Facebook accounts leaked online

Mark Zuckerberg uses Signal. Even he doesn't trust Whatsapp enough to use it.

Ditch social media. It makes no sense why these crony capitalists like Zuckerberg can feed off our data and be filthy rich. Don't get me wrong - I love capitalism but I absolutely detest crony capitalism. Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft etc are all monopolies and they need to be broken up ASAP. They wield far too much power than required. It's appalling how they can pay off scummy politicians to protect their butts.

Correct. The Data Protection Act (2018) is a copy and paste of the GDPR, with minor tweaks such as using the UK court system for the European one. Even if it wasn't then if any of those account holders were resident in the EU (regardless of the nationality of the account holder or where it was created,) it falls under GDPR.
