The 4x performance thing will be in something very Mac-specific in some optimised Adobe app no doubt, I find it rather unlikely that it'll be that fast in general..
Would love that GPU in anything but a Mac
Guess 400mm² at 5nm means it costs a fortune to make, and Apple are the ultimate closed ecosystem.
The 8 Core GPU in the normal M1 already got crazy results for an IGPU:
Four times that would be very impressive especially at 60W.
EDIT: those results were emulated too.
wow! I remember when Jensen launched the Tesla v100...the first chip to house 20 billion transistors, barely 5 years and we have 57B in a laptop!
Macbook made something wow finally, before it was just a nice peace of aluminium.
If only they had made these with, well, a full screen display.
I am dumbfounded that they added the notch to their macbooks, I just don't understand it. They have done a lot of really nice improvements with this generation - we have ports again, we have function keys, a usable keyboard, nice performance bump...
And then they put a hole int he screen, of a £2000+ laptop. No, you'd have to be crazy to buy one of these, OR someone who permanently docks and doesnt want to use their laptop as a laptop.
Madness.
It could be the most powerful laptop in the world (we all know apple will be VERY selective in those numbers) but if it doesn't run the software I use it's completely pointless for me... which is the case with any apple arm product due to some of the 3D programs I use being windows only. I do still have daliances with the idea of buying a mac or ipad pro though....
I did love the way they made a big thing about adding some more ports to their laptops.... wow who'd have thought people might actually need more than 2 usb ports on a device...
Even if it was supported I'm not sure I'd want to spend over £3000+ on a laptop (I'd want 32GB ram min).
I know it's aimed at 'professionals on the go' but those battery life figures are likely going to drop pretty quickly when you start doing 'professional' things meaning you're also likely going to need to be near a socket (windows devices are the same to be fair), you'll also need to be near sockets if you want to use any of those 4 other monitors they'd like you to buy at £4500 each....
In some ways I kind of feel that they should have released a mac mini pro or something similar because while not as 'glamorous' as a laptop it's a hell of a lot more functional for most of the people these new cpu's are aimed at imo.
And yes the notch is stupid but at the same time due to the design of os-x it's not going to affect much (I am curious about old 3:2 tv ratio though) due to the menu at the top (which I'm sure will be dark mode for most now)
It may be nice if you do alot of netbanking and surfing on the net, but to me it is completely useless, because it has a closed platform.
