I think Sony have big plans for the Cell CPU, IBM have already stated that they will use it in some of their servers. Sony's own range of PC's will probably be converted to Cell chips as well, it makes sense, seeing as they currently use Intel. Toshiba have also invested in the Cells design and production so thats another company who will be using it.
I believe that Sony will have different versions of the CPU to put into different devices like TV's. DVD players etc so yes Sony can take on Intel, but there's no way to know how good the CPU really is until we start seeing PS3's, PC's on the high street.
Nice. Wonder if they OC any good
Hmmmm, easy to misquote something like that IMHO..
There are lots of chips out there that are better than Pentiums, but it depends what for, you could say that the CL-SH7656 is better than a Pentium, yes it might be for the job it does, its like saying a Ferarri is better than a Land Rover, erm, well not if your a farmer and wanna drive across that field over there.....

They won't change their PC's to Cell under any circumstances, its not a standard architecture....
True - it's not x86 architecture and doesn't have a standard. Plus if Sony were to do this, tey would never in a million years license the technology to other manufacturers.Originally Posted by David

It was really as little information as that. It seems that there was a meeting in Japan and a guy who was representing Sony made this comment off record. It's been blown out of proportion.Originally Posted by Mike Fishcake

Cheers steven!
COuldn't help but notice this: "Sony is expected to sell more than 12 million PS3s in the first year"
Is that going to happen, considering the comment earlier on in the year about only rich people being able to afford it?
12 million seems slightly over excessive to say the least.
It will be interesting to see what comes out of CES in January

Pah come and play on my PCOriginally Posted by BusinessWeekOnline
Seriously though - Sony will not be able to match Intel on the CPU front. AMD can't do that and they're focused on the CPU market
I notice they don't say "The cell is better than the AMD Athlon 64"
