OK I see punishing them for breach of copywrite cause what they did is illegal. But thats totally ridiculous and I hope they appeal and win!

There are people already talking about filing a huge petition - not sure how far it would get them but I got a bad feeling they might make an example out of these guys

I dont see 17 years being forfilled as the final sentence and personally think 17 years is a ltiny but OTT, maybe 6 - 12 months and some hard community work after that =\ but 17 years is a bit of a joke heh

If they get jailed, tough. They knowingly broke the law therefore they pay the penalty.

Agreed that 17 years is RIDICULOUS.
They would learn their lesson with a 6-12 month sentence as said above. I think 17 years for selling a few modded xboxes with games on them could easily be classed as "cruel and unusual punishment"

Unfortunately copyright theft is becoming an increasingly major issue for those whose Intellectual Property is being used without payment or permission.

Consider this. You write an incredibly unique and special screenplay and show it to major film studios - they all turn you down. Funny thing is, 12-18 months down the line you see a film released that uses that very same premise and plot line. Wouldn't you want punishment for those that stole your idea and financial recompense? Not completely the same thing, but the ethic is there - big irony discussing ethics in regards to business, but what the hey...

Now you see why they want to prosecute? Money obviously the first motive, followed closely by a warning for those who would dare do the same. There's only space enough for one group to rip anybody off...

I see your point there dude but, where as the small guy (us) has no money compared with the big guy (corporations), therefore its somewhat justifiable in that way.

However, I don't have a problem with piracy as long as its for yourself and you aren't selling it on...

So I think they should get a one years sentence and be forced to pay the copyright owners the money that the made from their "franchise".

Doesn't that then prevent the developer from getting their share of the games sale, as small as their share is (I blame the greedy publishers), thus giving the publishers a reason to fleece the crap out of those who are buying the stuff?
