'Final' beta version of Vista (RC2 build 5744) available

Windows Vista RC2 (build 5744) - possibly the last beta version before the final operating system is released - came available Friday to technical beta testers.

Jim Allchin (heir-in-waiting to Bill Gates) told beta testers that this would be the last build before Vista moves to its release version and said that, "You’ll probably notice improvements in performance, application compatibility, as well as fit and finish work".

I'm using it right now, faster than XP, perfectly stable. a few apps seems to have a bit of trouble. Easily fixed though.

And it's soo purdy. I'm a sucker for glass effects and animation

    Thumbs up

I eventually got it working on my 24" iMac, and it's smooth as butter on there. I didn't have much luck with RC1 or the previous RTM-track build, but I eventually found some good instructions on the comments of a TUAW post (can't give you the URL, the board system won't let me yet).

Bluetooth doesn't work and I can't find the device which corresponds with the INF file, which is annoying... but completely bizarrely, the Bluetooth keyboard works perfectly. I'm still baffled by that.

Graphically, it looks gorgeous. Vista was absolutely designed for high-res widescreen monitors. I've had RC1 installed on my standard box (with a 17" TFT), and it looked like a slightly shinier version of XP. On the iMac, it looks bloody beautiful.

In terms of normal use, on my usual box (P4 2.4C @ 2.92GHz), it's a little less snappy than XP, but on the iMac's Core2 Duo, it feels very, very quick. I couldn't get my MSDN copy of XP to install on the iMac so I don't have any particularly good comparisons, but it definitely felt snappier on the Core2 Duo than XP did on my standard box.

I'm going to try out some gaming tonight, but as I don't have a baseline to work from, it's more going to be a general "how does it fare" thing than anything concrete.

Just got it running. Gonna take me a while to get things going on it before I can evaluate anything.

The biggest problem I've found is the Creative beta drivers expire in a couple of weeks. Hopefully they will put out some new ones.

Anyone know what the changes are from RC1?

microsoft released some new keys for RC1.
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

If you don't have a key, you can get a 3 day trial by unchecking the box "Automatically activated when online" during installation. But 3 days is really not worth it =/

All the previous CPP keys will work though so if you have a key for an older build, try it.

For me, RC2 (and RC1) feel quite snappy and work well. Basically Vista needs a huge initial investment in terms of hardware specs but as your hardware gets more powerful, Vista starts to surpass XP in speed. That is, Vista uses the hardware more efficiently.

Wireless seems to work fine on my machine (I tested a USB wifi adapter).

I don't feel it needs a huge investment unless you're on quite an old machine. Anything from the P4C series forward will be plenty acceptable for everyday use and gaming if it worked on XP. Probably lower than that too, but my 2.4C with 1gb is fine at work. If you use the general rule of thumb for RAM of double what XP requires (so 512 for XP would become 1gb on Vista, etc). It's a bit of a conservative estimate perhaps, and I guess it can show up slower hard drives too, speed wise, but other than that Vista seems OK in my experience.

There's a few tweaks you might want to use (turning off the indexing and such), but saying as the Athlon64s have been out for well over 2 years now, I'd deem any recent machine to be perfectly fine. If you're still on something older than that for cost reasons, then you're not going to be able to afford Vista anyway

Well I've been using Vista since RC1 was first released now and I couldn't be more pleased with it apart from one niggle.

Everything works fine just as I'd like except Soulseek. When I try to connect it practiacally disables my router so I lose internet access and nothing short of a reboot can cure it. It's a strange occurance as it never happened in the initial RC1 only in the interim build (5728) and continues to be present in this latest build.
It's not a life stopping problem, but it's the one flaw thats keeping Vista from being ideal for me.

That aside I'm still really enjoying it. It's a great OS to work with.

Just a quick thought on this - MS may have changed the way they deal with uPnP port forwarding requests to routers. I remember with some of the early versions of Soulseek, turning on uPnP would kill my router because the implementation wasn't quite as it was expecting. It might be worth trying turning it off in the Soulseek options, and manually forwarding a port on your router.

    Hope that helps!

Had a check over my settings. uPnP was off in Soulseek by default and as I usually use a port forward for it anyway it all seems to be okay.

Out of interest I changed the usual port I'd use for Soulseek for something in a completely different range (5 digit instead of the usual 4) and installed on a different drive.
*huge fingers crossed* at the moment it seems to be holding out.

Funny thing is since I posted this, Bittorrent decided to do the same thing with me. All I can think (with my limited networking knowledge.. I'm more of a hardware type :/) is that it seems to be getting flooded and they just stops unable to cope until it gets a restart.

It has to be a Vista fault as it never did this with XP, and even if the internet connection is lost on the PC, the Xbox (which is currently being used online via the same router) had no problem when the PC connection was lost.

It certainly is a strange bug anyhow.

Yeah, there's something funny going on with the new network stack in Vista that sometimes causes problems.

One thing you can try is to disable the IPV6 components (if you don't need it) along with all the components that depend on it in the Network Settings.

BTW, when I say "huge initial investment" it's an exaggeration as a sideblow to all the peeps that are complaining about the requirements of Vista. That said, 1GB of RAM for Vista is quite a bit nicer than 512MB. For everything else, medium level hardware is more than plenty.

Which antivirus solution(s) is/are everyone using?

AVG free (as of yesterday) is "blocked for computability reasons" and can't be installed, and the "free trail solutions" offered on the "Vista partners" page all require me to subscribe to spamlists which I'm refusing to do because that just encourages them.

I used RC1 since day 1 and was very impressed with it. RC2 had a couple of issues during install (possibly related to a new USB hub) which along with the above software incompatibilities has left me slightly less satisfied with this build. I have decided to save myself some effort by leaving the other boxes at RC1 for now.

I have similar issues with my D-Link router crashing when using uTorrent and popular .torrent files.

I love Vista, its soo fast!!! A lot faster than XP and everything just seems to be integrated (like 3d and desktop are soo perfectly intertwined). Playing games in windowed mode rocks and 3d performance is almost as good as XP with standard microsoft drivers! :O
